While Islam is projected to experience significant growth in the coming decades due to higher birth rates in Muslim-majority countries, there are also indicators of potential decline in some regions and within specific demographics. Overall, the global Muslim population is expected to increase, but the rate of growth might be impacted by factors like religious switching and changing demographics.

Potential Areas of Decline or Stagnation:
  • Religious Switching:
Studies indicate that while Islam has high retention rates in many regions, with a large majority of those raised Muslim continuing to identify as such, there is also a degree of religious switching, with some individuals leaving Islam for other religions or becoming religiously unaffiliated.

  • Declining Birth Rates:
In some Muslim-majority countries, birth rates have been declining, which could slow down the overall population growth of Muslims. For example, fertility rates in Iran fell rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s.

The first chart shows the population, which shows an increase.

The second chart shows the switch out, and it shows Hinduism is seeing a decline.
