On October 7, Ukraine’s state defense enterprise Ukroboronprom has signed a cooperation agreement with the US-based company LeVanta Tech Inc. to jointly develop a new class of naval drones that can operate both on water and in the air.
According to Defense Express, the initiative may pave the way for Ukraine to eventually receive the Halia-X—a heavy, unmanned ekranoplan drone with a potential range of up to 5,000 kilometers and a payload capacity of 1 ton.
A new class of maritime drone
The collaboration centers on the “float-and-fly” concept, which utilizes the aerodynamic ground effect to reduce drag and enhance flight efficiency at low altitudes above water.
LeVanta Tech specializes in this field, and according to the company, its aircraft can reduce drag by as much as 50 percent compared to conventional designs.

At center of this technology is Halia drone family, which includes 3 models: the civil Halia-S, mid-sized military Halia-M, & long-range military Halia-X. All three designs take advantage of ground effect, Halia-X stands out due to its scale & potential military applications. As
Defense Express reports, the Halia-X is powered by a jet engine, can carry up to 1,000 kg, & has a flight range of nearly 5,000 km.
Designed to skim just meters above the water’s surface at speeds of up to 277 of km/h, platform’s low radar visibility and high mobility could complicate detection and interception efforts.

Ukraine's move to a corps-based command structure aimed to boost military efficiency. Almost a year later, the promised improvements remain out of reach. "It turned out to be an unfounded, hasty pseudo-solution," said Bohdan Krotevych, the former commander of Ukraine's Azov Brigade. The Ukrainian army, which entered the full-scale war in 2022 with brigades as its largest standing units, has spent past year restructuring into a corps-based system. Under this new structure, corps, typically comprising two to five brigades, or roughly 10,000 to 50,000 troops, serve as the highest operational units. The reform also sought to phase out the use of ops-strategic groupings (OSUVs) temporary command structures responsible for managing specific sectors front line by coordinating multiple ops-tactical groupings (OTUs) tactical groupings (TGs).
However, many of the same challenges that plagued the old system persist, raising questions about the effectiveness and necessity of the overhaul. According to Krotevych, reform is largely theoretical, as none of the corps currently functions as a true operational unit, lacking full coordination & overseeing only one or two brigades — far fewer than required for effective operations. Corps commanders, who are usually more experienced than heads of temporary military formations, were supposed to improve the situation," Krotevych told the Kyiv Independent. "But the war has not waited, and by the time these decisions were implemented, the situation had deteriorated to a point where corps commanders could no longer influence it," he added.

Russia thought slow and steady would win the war—but Ukraine just shattered that plan. On October 12, Ukraine’s new assault forces achieved a 3.5-kilometer breakthrough in Zaporizhzhia, liberating Mali Shcherbaky, Shcherbaky, and part of Stepove. Coordinated, mobile, and trained for precision, these troops are redefining Ukraine’s counterattacks. With small units striking fast and supporting heavier forces, Ukraine is reclaiming territory and pushing closer to the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. This may be just the beginning...

Only 25% of Ukrainians believe President Volodymyr Zelensky should remain in office after the end of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, according to a poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) published on Oct. 13.
This result contrasts with the relatively high level of trust he continues to enjoy among the public, according to the same poll. When asked, 41% of respondents said Zelensky should stay in politics, with one-quarter of them wanting him to be re-elected. Meanwhile, 36% believe Zelensky should leave politics after the war, and another 14% think he should face criminal prosecution, the survey showed.

Here, as Georgia flexes its muscles by hosting large-scale NATO military exercises, it no longer hides its desire to be rid of Russian influence. The participation of Ukrainian troops, battle-hardened and equipped with extensive drone warfare experience, has only heightened Russian anxieties, suggesting a rising threat that could challenge Moscow from the south.
The NATO military exercise Agile Spirit 2025, recently commenced in Turkey and Georgia, strengthens ties and coordination between NATO and non-NATO forces in the southern Caucasus. The NATO force includes soldiers from 12 NATO countries, as well as Georgia, Moldova, and notably Ukraine as non-NATO participants, with Armenia and Japan serving as observers. Agile Spirit comprises command and staff training, field exercises, live-fire demonstrations, and the exchange of knowledge and experience between participants. The exercise focuses on enhancing interoperability between NATO forces and Western-aligned non-NATO countries, to increase coordination and combat capabilities in the event of Russian military actions in the South Caucasus and possible NATO intervention.

France is preparing to modify its fleet of Mirage 2000D fighter jets to intercept long-range suicide drones such as Iran’s Shahed-136, according to Opex360 on October 12.
The move is part of a broader effort to develop a cost-effective aerial platform for countering UAV threats, taking cues from Ukraine’s experience defending against Russian drone attacks.
As Opex360 reported, the chief of France’s Air and Space Force directly acknowledged that the decision was driven by the growing threat posed by long-range Shahed-type drones.
The country’s ability to neutralize mass drone attacks has pushed Western militaries to rethink the role of legacy aircraft in air defense operations.

According to Defense Express on October 13, the long-range capability of drones like the Shahed makes them a credible threat to France itself, especially if launched from Kaliningrad or Belarus.
While French authorities have not officially disclosed the scope of the upgrades, Defense Express notes that one likely modification is the integration of 70mm laser-guided rockets such as the Thales FZ275 LGR.
These low-cost precision munitions are already in high demand and could provide a high-volume, scalable option for engaging slow-moving drone targets.
The concept mirrors the US practice of outfitting F-15 and F-16 fighters with APKWS (Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System) rockets. W/configuration a single F-15E can reportedly destroy up to 50 UAV targets in one mission.

On August 2nd, 2025, Ukrainian forces executed their most daring deep-strike operation, sending swarms of indigenous UJ-26 Beaver & UJ-22 Airborne drones up to 630 kilometers into Russian territory. Through brilliant tactics including corner reflector decoys, frequency-hopping communications, and precision timing exploiting reload windows, these $50,000 drones overcame Russia's most advanced air defenses to destroy critical infrastructure. The strikes eliminated 4% of Russia's refining capacity, destroyed over 200 Iranian Shahed drones, and paralyzed military semiconductor production for six months, forcing Russia to redeploy front-line air defenses and fundamentally altering the strategic balance of the conflict.

Here, wave after wave of desperate Russian attacks were crushed by the Ukrainian defense while trying to reach their encircled forces near Dobropillia. As the fields and trenches were covered with dead Russians, their commanders decided to blow up a poisonous pipeline and create a gruesome scene of self-destruction. With battles going on for the village of Novotoretske, Russian infantry continued to pour in, but they were unable to overcome the prepositioned razorwire obstacles that Ukrainians had turned into kill zones. Ukrainian drone footage from the vicinity of Novotoretske reveals devastating scenes, which soldiers called the razor wire massacre. In just one short clip, more than 50 Russian bodies lie tangled in the steel coils and dragon’s teeth that are part of the Ukrainian defensive lines. Others were piled up in the anti-tank ditches, as Russian assault troops tried to crawl through them, with Ukrainian drones catching them in the process. One by one, they were cut down as explosions tore through the wire barriers. When the smoke cleared, the field had turned into a lifeless maze of corpses, fragments, and twisted barricades. Russian commanders are desperate to reconnect with their cut-off forces near Dobropillia, as the encircled groupings are running out of food, ammunition, and any chance of relief.
