Ukraine's youngest general stabilized the most difficult section of frontline, how
he was able to change the course of the Battle for Pokrovsk. Here, nearly one year ago, situation in Pokrovsk direction took a dramatic turn, resulted Ukrainian forces facing months of relentless pressure for Russian breakthroughs. Ukrainian forces in the entire Pokrovsk direction were at a constant defensive posture from May 2024 after they break through at Ocheretyne, allowed them to push Ukrainian forces back along the entire contact line for months. On Pokrovsk, their objective of, putting Ukrainian defenders in a critical position.

Now recognizing the urgency, Ukrainian high command appointed General Mykhailo Drapatyi to take command of Khortitsiya Group of Forces, tasked with stabilizing front & shifting momentum in Ukraine’s favor. Drapatyi a long military career full of combat experience from very start of first hostilities between the Ukrainian and pro-Russian separatists dating back to 2014. During the Battle of Mariupol in May 2014, he as commander of 2nd Battalion of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, he led an armored assault head-on in a BMP infantry fighting vehicle, enabling Ukrainian forces to push pro-Russian separatists from second largest city of the Donetsk region.

Later, in battle of Izvarino, Ukrainians attempted to cut off separatists from their Russian supply lines, Drapatyi reacted to forming cauldron around Ukrainian forces timely enough, he was able lead men to break out successfully, without leaving behind any equipment, both bringing Drapatyi major recognition in the Ukrainian army.

Drapatyi had risen quickly through ranks, becoming a colonel by 2019 and a brigadier general by end of 2021, making him youngest general in Ukrainian army. In one interview, he said, was personally ready for a large-scale invasion. Later on, Drapatyi was assigned to the defense of Kharkiv after Russian forces launched their counteroffensive in 2024. Here, he effectively reorganized communication structure between low-level commanders on ground & the Ukrainian high command. These changes resulted in more accurate reporting on Russian forces' concentrations, movements, and routes of attack and much-improved battle cohesion.

General Mykhailo Drapaty, after stabilizing situation on front, managed to set stage decisive counterattacks turned tide battle in most critical sector of front line, Pokrovsk. Last report, Drapaty led an intense campaign on Russia logistics, supply routes into death traps and
drastically slowing their advance. He rotated brigades off frontline, reinforced positions with experienced fighters, and improved coordination, allow Ukrainians to build hold new defensive lines, these defenses in place, enemy forces were unable to meaningful gains anywhere, as they continued to throw their men into frontal meat grinder assaults.

At same time, Russian counteroffensive to push Ukrainians out of Kursk was in full swing, defended against by some of the most elite well-equipped Ukrainian combat brigades. This was the last thing Russians needed, as Ukrainian defense in Kursk continued to deal more & more casualties to Russian forces, many reserves, that Russian high command preferred to send to Pokrovsk, would have to be sent to Kursk instead, as the elite VDV & naval infantry core of the Russian army continued to suffer devastating losses at Kursk.

This coming significant cost to Russian efforts at Pokrovsk, Russians suffering a casualty rate nearly twice as high in this direction, over 15 thousand losses, of 7 thousand were killed, during Jan alone. With Russians running low on reserves, they resorted to desperate donkey, horse measures @Pokrovsk. Russians started sending the wounded to frontline on recent active assault op more & more frequently. Recognizing situation was shifting in their favor, Draptyi ordered his forces to prepare a decisive series of counterattacks in the Pokrovsk direction, planning implement the lessons he learned from his previous offensives into this situation.

Moscow  -  Russia and Ukraine have exchanged 372 soldiers in a prisoner swap brokered by United Arab Emirates, the Russian defence ministry said Wednesday. The Kremlin announced the swap on Tuesday, following talks between Donald Trump & Vladimir Putin.

Moscow returned 175 Ukrainian POWs, as well as “22 seriously wounded prisoners of war in need of urgent medical assistance”, while Kyiv returned 175 Russian troops, the Russian said
Russia said it returned the Ukrainian wounded prisoners as a “gesture of goodwill”.
“All the Russian soldiers are in Belarus, where they are being provided with the necessary psychological and medical assistance and given the opportunity to contact their relatives,” it added.
The two sides have swapped hundreds of prisoners since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive in February 2022, in one of the few areas of cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv.

Overall, Ukrainians launched their first demonstrative strike with Long Neptune missiles, inflicting severe damage to one of the largest Russian oil refineries, which now pose an even greater risk to the most critical Russian military infrastructure. President Zelensky also announced that the Ukrainian military-industrial complex will produce one hundred thousand long-range munitions of various types, including the Long Neptune cruise missiles. This even further underscores the massive achievement of Ukraine, as Ukrainians will now be able to strike valuable and critical Russian assets deep in the rear, with domestically produced cruise missiles, on a massive scale never seen before.

With Ukraine advances securing key positions west of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian forces are now entering next phase of their counteroffensive. As elite assault units push deeper into Russian-held territory, town of Shevchenko become focal point of intense fighting, outcome can reshape entire battlefield. Following meeting between Trump & Putin, Russia agreed to a ceasefire in the air, halting strikes on energy infrastructure, military assets. However Putin denied ceasefire on the ground, Ukrainians are increasing pressure on frontlines to force Russian leadership to reconsider their choices.
The primary objective of Ukrainians in this area is to completely eliminate the Russian pincer on western flank of Pokrovsk. After Russians failed to take Pokrovsk into the pocket, they depleted their offensive capabilitiesas months of fighting had left Russian soldiers exhausted & unable to maintain the pressure. Ukrainians intend to exploit this weakness & push Russians from Pokrovsk, & not allowing Russians to recuperate & prepare for a renewed offensive effort on Pokrovsk. To push they out of this area, Ukrainians initiated 2nd stage of their counteroffensive.

The 1st stage Ukrainians to establish control of frontline settlements, like
Kotlyne, Pischane, and Uspenivka, as well as retake key defensive positions on higher elevations, thereby dismantling immediate threat posed by Russian western pincer. With Russian defenses breached, Ukrainians now focus on Shevchenko, a strategically vital town & last Russian foothold from here they can restart their assaults on Pokrovsk. We take looking @topographic map, we see Shevchenko is also the last remaining Russian foothold on high-ground plateau around Pokrovsk. Securing Shevchenko can give Ukrainians complete control of this area, creating a so-called fortress Pokrovsk on high ground. Additionally, from high ground, Ukrainians would gain fire control over Russian ground lines of communication of Russian western pincer in the lowlands. This would be the nail in to coffin for Russian efforts here, enabling a swift Ukrainian advance to reclaim this area.

Russia is pushing to gain full control over four occupied Ukrainian oblasts—Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—during negotiations with the United States in Saudi Arabia, the Moscow Times reported, citing sources familiar with the Kremlin’s strategy.

Although Russian forces do not fully control any of these regions, the Kremlin demands them in their administrative borders, as defined in the Russian Constitution following their illegal annexation.

A Kremlin-linked official told the Moscow Times that Russia's President Vladimir Putin cannot afford to lose these territories politically, and Russia intends to solidify its grip on them at any cost.

"The Constitution has no mechanism for regions to leave Russia. We need all of Zaporizhzhia and all of Kherson,"
