Trump advisers concede Ukraine peace deal is months away. January 15, 2025.

Summary:
Trump advisers are quietly backing away from the campaign promise to end the war on Day One
New extended timeline - months, not days or weeks - recognizes intractability of conflict
Putin sending mixed messages about readiness to resolve the conflict.

WASHINGTON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Advisers to President-elect Donald Trump now concede that the Ukraine war will take months or even longer to resolve, a sharp reality check on his biggest foreign policy promise - to strike a peace deal on his first day in the White House.

Two Trump associates, who have discussed the war in Ukraine with the president-elect, told Reuters they were looking at a timeline of months to resolve the conflict, describing the Day One promises as a combination of campaign bluster and a lack of appreciation of the intractability of the conflict and the time it takes to staff up a new administration.

Ukraine’s military now totals 880,000 soldiers, facing 600,000 Russian troops. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Jan. 15 comprises 880,000 soldiers, defending the entire country against 600,000 Russian troops concentrated in specific areas.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish PM Donald Tusk in Warsaw, he said Russia's localized troop concentration creates a numerical advantage. Russian troops are concentrated in several areas, so in some areas, they have a quantitative advantage," he said. Ukraine has been struggling with a manpower shortage?.

Especially in the infantry, while Russia has intensified its offensive in Donetsk Oblast since the summer of 2024.

The announcement of the Govt’s new 100-year defence pact with Ukraine by UK understandably focused on what we’re giving Kyiv. Given the latter is fighting for its survival against Russian invasion, that’s perfectly proper. But a century is a long time, so it is worth thinking about how such a partnership could benefit the United Kingdom in the long termSo here’s one idea: why not establish a Ukrainian equivalent of a Brigade of Gurkhas?. A permanent, volunteer unit of Ukrainian nationals in our own Armed Forces be the most tangible possible expression of our military alliance serve an obvious British need.

At first glance, might seem like an outlandish idea. Yet it actually lines up with Kyiv’s own thinking, Zelensky has publicly stated once war is over Ukraine will possess one of Europe’s largest most experienced militaries & this could be a significant asset to its Western allies. Ukrainian regiment in British Army would not just allow us to recoup some of our investment in training & equipping the Ukrainian army, but also provide an additional pool of troops – trained to our Armed Forces’ high standards – available to Kyiv in the event of future conflicts. As for UK might make no further case for such a proposal than that we are hardly in a position to turn it down. Our military is deep into a long-term recruitment crisis which (alongside decades of inadequate defence spending) has hollowed out our ability to project force overseas... Tongue Undecided

This is UK thinking. Moreover, overseas recruitment is a long-established part of the British military tradition. The above-mentioned Brigade of Gurkhas is rightly cherished as one of our elite formations; beyond that, thousands of recruits from Ireland and the Commonwealth serve with distinction. Nor are we even the Western nation most radically invested in idea. France maintains the famous Foreign Legion, which to this day issues recruits with a new identity, asks no questions of anybody not wanted by Interpol, and holds out the promise of French citizenship to those who complete their term of service and achieve an honourable discharge.

Perhaps these could be written off as historical quirks, holdovers from the imperial era which, however useful, cannot be replicated in ‘the modern world’. Yet as so often, such thinking merely treats a fundamentally aesthetic belief about modernity as if it were a practical fact. The ongoing erosion of the post-Cold War order – not least Russia’s invasion itself – should put paid to such lazy end-of-history thinking.

The fact is that formations such as the Brigade of Gurkhas and the Foreign Legion clearly work, whilst if Commonwealth recruitment plays a seemingly residual role in our Armed Forces that is a result only of our own policy choices – last year it emerged that we have rejected 24,000 would-be Commonwealth recruits over just the previous five years, despite the manpower shortfall.

London should obviously not strong-arm Kyiv into such an arrangement. But were they open to the idea, what grounds are there for supposing that a brigade of reverse-Varangians would not be an asset to Britain? And what better long-term guarantee of our commitment to Ukraine than the debt of honour incurred by such service?

Trapped between an increasingly dangerous world and an ever-more precarious fiscal position at home, ministers would be foolish to dismiss such an arrangement out of hand.

For first time in Russia’s 35-mth wider war on Ukraine, Ukrainians has tank advantage over Russians. But only only along certain stretches of the 800-mile front. Bunyatov, commander of a unit in 24th Assault Battalion Aidar with call sign Osman, also reported that Russians have almost wiped Chasiv Yar off the face of the earth.

"Nothing is left of the city of Chasiv Yar except for basements and empty walls," Osman wrote on his Telegram channel.

“This is a sign our warriors are holding strong & the overall defense on front is more or less stable. Gloomy signs in gloomy times, but unfortunately, these are the realities of war.”

Already damaged in previous attacks on this area of business centre's tall glass tower and main building are now a shell after being hit by either a second missile or very large fragment. It was empty when the missile struck.

A military factory in the neighbourhood has been targeted repeatedly by Russia, but damage, we saw was to civilian buildings. An official said a couple had been killed on the street inside their vehicle. Officials earlier reported four people had died in the attack.

Beside main crater, a Ukrainian forensics expert examined fragments of missile collected into a heap of twisted grey metal on the pavement.
  1. Andriy Kulchytskyy, head of Military Research Laboratory @Kyiv Institute of Scientific Expertise, told BBC the crater was from a direct hit with an Iskander-M ballistic missile, based on markings on the missile fragments. "This specific site shows one impact," he explained. "There are additional strikes, & we have collected debris. Here, the missile directly hit the road."

A Russian missile strike on Ukrainian capital killed 3 people, wounded 3 more on Saturday. Kyiv city officials said victims were two men, aged 43 & 25, and a 41-year-old woman. Ukraine’s intelligence unit said Ukrainian drones hit an oil depot in Russia’s Tula region in the early hours of Saturday, with the Russian governor of the region earlier reporting a fuel tank fire at an industrial site.
Ukraine’s air force said it downed two Iskander ballistic missiles as well as 24 Russian attack drones overnight.

Engels is burning.Via Center for Strategic Communication. On Jan. 8, Ukrainian drones flew at least 400 miles to strike near the Russian air force’s Engels bomber base in the city of Saratov in southern Russia. The blasts triggered a blaze at a sprawling depot containing as much as 800,000 tons of fuel—a blaze that raged for days.
The fire finally burned itself out, or firefighters extinguished it, after six days. Hours later on Tuesday, drones struck a second time. “There will be no rest for the wicked,” the Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communication crowed. Tuesday attack was part of a wider wave of drone raids, reportedly the biggest of the 35-month wider war for Ukraine, that specifically targeted fuel and munitions storage and oil refineries, among other targets. Each damaged ammunition depot, refinery, tank farm or chemical plant weakens Russia’s ability to wage war against Ukraine,” the Ukrainian security service told Kyiv Post.

It’s unclear what types of drone were involved in the back-to-back attacks on Engels, but Kyiv Post mentioned the PD-2, Beaver, Liutyi and UJ-22—all of which are between six and 10 feet long and drine-driven. Ukraine has developed a few dizzying array of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, including some based on modified sport planes can drone missile that can extended range to 1,000 miles with hundreds of pounds of explosives.

“It'll be years b4 Ukrainian Air Force has enough experience to execute combat missions effectively.” That’s what the experts predicted in 2024 about Ukraine’s use of F-16 fighter jets. Yet just 6-mths ONLY, a young Ukrainian pilot shattered expectations by downing 6-cruise missiles in one daring sortie. From air-to-air missile precision to a breathtaking cannon kill, this is a very real story redefines the bravery, skill & the F-16’s legacy.
