Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy just made a bold statement: “I am exchangeable for NATO.” But what led to this moment? A fiery Oval Office clash with Trump, rising tensions between Ukraine and the U.S., and a desperate push for NATO security. With Europe rallying behind Ukraine, will this gamble pay off? Or is Zelenskyy’s future now uncertain? Watch now to uncover the full story.

Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) was behind explosions near Desantnaya Bay in Russia's Vladivostok on May 30, reportedly damaged military personnel & equipment, a source in HUR told Kyiv Independent. If confirmed, the Vladivostok op will be Ukraine's furthest incursion into Russian territory - about 6,800 km from Ukrainian border. Two blasts occurred early in morning at a site where Russia's 47th Separate Air Assault Battalion 155th Separate Guards Marine Brigade was stationed. 155th Marine Brigade has been actively involved in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including battles in Mariupol and Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast, as well as op in Russia's Kursk Oblast.
Russia's Anti-Terrorist Commission of Primorsky Krai attributed the explosions to the ignition of propane-butane cylinders inside a vehicle. No official casualties have been reported. One of the explosions allegedly happened near a checkpoint, while the other hit location of personnel & the unit's command. Manpower, military equipment,& special equipment were hit," the source claimed.
The Kyiv Independent could not verify these claims. Desantnaya Bay is located in Vladivostok in Russia's Far East, which lies some 185 km (114 miles) from the Russian-North Korean border.

Here, Russians launched their long-anticipated summer offensive on Kharkiv, aiming to reverse the losses suffered in 2022 and collapse the Ukrainian front from Vovchansk. But as Russian Spetsnaz units led the charge, they were met head-on by French special forces volunteers fighting for Ukraine, triggering an unexpected brutal clash.
The goal of the Russian forces in this area is to retake the territories lost to the Ukrainians during the 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive and achieve what they failed to do last year in 2024. If Russians achieve a breakthrough at Vovchansk, they will continue their offensive along the Siversky Donets river and threaten to outflank the Ukrainian forces at Kupiansk, placing the Ukrainians at risk of frontline collapse, and taking much of territory in the process.
As you remember from a previous report, the Russians had already initiated the first phase of their attacks with large reconnaissance-in-force operations, meant to test the Ukrainian defenses, but were destroyed even before they crossed the administrative border. These and other assaults indicate that Russians are already setting their plans in motion.
Zooming into Vovchansk, the entire town was left in ruins after the brutal fighting that took place during the initial Russian offensive of 2024 and subsequent positional battles within the town. The Russian forces are in control of the northern part of the town, holed up in basements, as there are no standing buildings left. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian forces are positioned in the southern part of the town along the riverbank and in the local aggregate plant, allowing the Ukrainians to maintain a tactical presence in the town. This enduring tactical presence and the severe damage to the town itself created a no-man's land between the Russian and Ukrainian lines, where the collapsed buildings and ruins prevent either side from establishing long-term positions.
In Vovchansk, the scale of destruction has left Russian infantry units exposed, with no intact buildings or basements.
- Forced to operate in open rubble, they become easy targets for Ukrainian drones. Over a year of futile assaults has turned town into a graveyard for Russian troops, as each wave falling where the last one died, forced to walk over each other's bodies with dry blood.

The Tupolev Tu-95, the Tupolev Tu-22, as well as the Tupolev Tu-160, are all Russian heavy bombers regularly used to launch missiles at Ukrainian cities. The Tu-95 is the oldest of the three aircraft, a Soviet-era plane that made its first flight in 1952. It was originally used to carry nuclear bombs but has since evolved to launch cruise missiles. Each aircraft can carry 16 cruise missiles – either the Kh-55/Kh-555 or the newer Kh-101 and Kh-102 air-launched cruise missiles. It features turboprop engines rather than jet engines, as during the Cold War, their increased efficiency allowed it to fly all the way to the United States without refueling. The Tu-22 carries the Kh-22 missiles, which pose a particular problem for Ukraine. It is supersonic and travels at around 4,000 kilometers per hour. Currently, it can only be shot down with the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system and potentially the SAMP-T, a joint Italian-French system.
The Tu-160 is Russia's more modern strategic bomber, entering service in 1987. To this day, it remains the largest operational bomber in the world. It can carry a total of 12 Kh-55 missiles and up to 24 Kh-15s. Now Ukraine used long
term planning by their intelligent agents
to follow up detecting Russia air defense systems, guided missiles, & coordinating targets on Russian fighter jets assets. The Russia possesses fewer than 10 of these, A-50 aircraft have an estimated price tag of around $350 million.

The president of the Ukrainian Aviation Association of Pilots and Aircraft Owners, Hennadiy Khazan, is confident that Germany will deliver a sufficient number of Taurus missiles to Ukraine to destroy Russian underground targets.
“When we receive the German Taurus missiles, we cannot simply rename them and use them as Ukrainian missiles. In this case, international regulations apply. Ukraine is the end user, and there is a special certificate for that. Furthermore, when joint production begins, Germany will still have rights to certain components, and Ukraine will remain the end user. However, based on official statements, we have grounds to believe that these missiles will hit the targets they are intended for,” Khazan explained this opinion during a broadcast on Espreso.
The aviation expert clarified that the Taurus missiles were designed to destroy underground targets. “It is important to explain one very crucial point. Taurus missiles have one very important advantage. They are intended for destroying underground bunkers and storage facilities, including command centers and so on.
Therefore, I believe Ukraine could receive 3 to 4 times more Taurus missiles than the number of underground enemy facilities. These targets need not just to be hit but completely destroyed,” he added.
Earlier, media reported that the German government plans to limit information about military aid deliveries to Ukraine. At the same time, Berlin will no longer comment on plans regarding the transfer of Taurus missiles to Kyiv.
"There are no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons delivered to Ukraine — neither by the U.K., France, nor us. There are no restrictions by the U.S. either," Merz said, recently.
Thanks to a more efficient engine, Hoffmann explains, Taurus can also reach deeper into Russia than other system currently in Ukraine's arsenal, and packs more of an explosive punch than Ukraine’s new crop of deep-strike "missile-drones."
Despite a publicly advertised range of 560 or more kilometers, Hoffmann believes they can reach 700 to 800 kilometers. They are, however, air-launched, so they originate from planes that would not be over the front line, where they would be vulnerable to Russian anti-aircraft fire.

Taurus "can be easily adapted" to F-16 fighter jets, which are now deployed in Ukraine, and to Gripen — a Swedish aircraft that could be on their way soon.
"Taurus is the best weapon system in Western arsenals to take down bridges," said Fabian Hoffmann, a doctoral research fellow at the University of Oslo specializing in missile technology.
"So in theory, if Ukraine wants to take down the Crimean Bridge, Taurus would be the ideal weapon system to do that." Experts believe that the Taurus is unlikely to be a game-changer in the war and that while targeting the Crimean Bridge would be a big symbolic victory for Kyiv, Ukraine needs it primarily to replenish its long-range weapons stockpile.
"Storm Shadow, SCALP EG, they are running out sooner or later. Taurus is another very capable cruise missile that could be used by Ukrainians to just extend the availability of its long-range range strike capability," Hoffman said.
"This is a key advantage. It's mostly about the quantity and the number of missile systems available in Ukraine's arsenal."

Inside Russia, calls for peace come with conditions — and Kremlin talking points.
Following the second round of direct peace talks with Ukraine, the Russian side leaked its proposal on how to end its war — effectively a demand for Ukraine's surrender. Yet, if the intentions of the Kremlin are no secret — continue the war until a political or military victory — getting information on what people in Russia think of their country's war and the prospects for peace is a more complicated endeavor.
While those based in Russia interviewed by the Kyiv Independent share a desire for peace, they are no supporters of Ukraine and its sovereignty. Despite speaking on condition of anonymity and with the ability to freely express their views, Russians inside the country spoke along the official Russian lines accusing Ukraine of stalling negotiations or even arguing here will be no peace as long as Ukraine remains independent country.
These views are in line with polls conducted in Russia, which some believe are untrustworthy. Around 64% of the respondents in Russia favored peace talks, according to a poll by the independent Russian pollster Levada Center published on June 2. However, a majority of respondents (73%) believe that Ukraine should make concessions prior to a ceasefire. Only 18% think that Moscow should agree to a ceasefire and then resolve all other issues.
Soviet nostalgia
The Kyiv Independent interviewed people with different backgrounds and views, including those who have a track record of being opposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin's regime. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. One of them, a 40-year-old photographer, used to attend rallies against Putin. Yet the photographer's past opposition to Putin did not make her a supporter of Ukraine, nor did it mean she acknowledged her country's faults. In a conversation with the Kyiv Independent, photographer expressed nostalgia for Soviet Union & said that she believes there will be no peace until former Soviet republics are reunited under the Kremlin's wing.
"Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus would unite into one country," she said. "And then there would be no more problems. And all the foreign agents would get kicked out." She also argued that "recognizing all the (occupied) territories as part of Russia is a done deal."
Russia illegally annexed Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in 2014. The Kremlin also announced the illegal annexation of Ukraine's Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk oblasts in 2022 despite only partially controlling them.

Ukraine regions must be ban on NATO, limits on Kyiv's army — Russian media publishes Moscow's official peace demands...
The Russian delegation handed Ukraine a so-called "peace memorandum" with its proposals for a ceasefire during the second round of peace talks in Istanbul, Russian-state media outlet TASS reported on June 2, publishing the alleged document. The Russian memorandum began circulating online following the talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, during which the parties again failed to reach a ceasefire.
Among Russia's key demands, according to document, is official recognition Russia's annexation of Crimea, as well as annexation of Ukraine's Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk oblasts, none of which Moscow controls in full.
Russia demanded complete withdrawal of all troops from Kherson, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk oblasts, followed by a demobilization in Ukraine.
Moscow's other demands: include that Ukraine sticks to its neutral status, abandoning its aspirations to join NATO & other possible military alliances, a ban on the redeployment of Ukrainian troops, and an official end to Western arms supplies and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. According to document, Ukraine must abandon its claims for compensation for damages, guarantee amnesty for "political prisoners," make Russian the official language of Ukraine.
No foreign troops to be deployed in Ukraine, according to the document,
Here: Ukraine effectively goes against the Putin/Russoa porposal
Here for a potential peacekeeping force in the country following the end of an active phase of the war. During the talks in Istanbul, the Ukrainian delegation presented a peace proposal, included a prisoner swap in an all-for-all format, the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as the release of all civilians held in Russian captivity. According to the Ukrainian proposal seen by the Kyiv Independent, Kyiv would retain its right to join the EU and NATO. Ukraine also highlighted the need for security guarantees to avoid further Russian invasion. Meantime, frozen Russian assets must be used to rebuild Ukraine and pay reparations, while some of the sanctions against Russia may be lifted if a ceasefire is achieved.

A recent Ukrainian drone strike deep inside Russian territory has sparked anger and concern among Kremlin officials over the exposed vulnerability of a nuclear-capable air force far from the front lines, Bloomberg reported on June 2, citing undisclosed sources close to senior Moscow officials.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out the operation "Spiderweb" on June 1, targeting Russian air bases at Belaya, Diaghilev, Olenya, and Ivanovo with drones hidden in trucks across Russia.
The strike is claimed to have hit 41 aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers. These planes belong to Russia's nuclear-capable air fleet and are used to launch cruise missile attacks on Ukraine's cities.
Ukraine's General Staff said in its daily update on June 3 that Russian forces lost 12 aircraft, without elaborating on the types of destroyed planes or whether more had been damaged.

Russian officials and propagandists have chosen different strategies for dealing with the unprecedented Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian airfields that took place on June 1. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said that, as part of an operation dubbed Spiderweb, it had destroyed or damaged 41 Russian aircraft parked at the Belaya, Dyagilevo, Olenya, and Ivanovo air bases on June 1.
The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the number of aircraft hit by SBU. Kyiv has claimed it had disabled 34% of Russia's strategic bomber fleet in what is seen as one of the most daring operations during the full-scale war. Strike reportedly involved 117 drones launched from trucks hidden across Russian territory.

Russian top officials, including President Vladimir Putin, did not comment on the Ukrainian operation at all, while some pro-war propagandists tried to downplay scale. Other propagandists threatened to take revenge on Ukraine & the West by launching nuclear strikes and attacking airfields in NATO countries. But some pro-war bloggers were more skeptical, saying that the attacks were a "Russian Pearl Harbor" — a reference to the devastating Japanese strikes on the U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1941. These bloggers argued Russian authorities should not lie about the attacks & must draw conclusions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
"Russia's nuclear threats don't look serious after it became clear that you can deprive Russia of a large part of its nuclear potential using drones and trucks," Russian anti-Kremlin columnist Sergei Parkhomenko told the Kyiv Independent in a reference to nuclear-capable strategic bombers allegedly destroyed by Ukraine

Downplaying attacks by Russia's Defense Ministry presented the Ukrainian strikes as "a terrorist attack" by "Kyiv regime" — an odd claim, given that the operation targeted exclusively military facilities, not civilians. The ministry claimed that "all terrorist attacks were repelled" and that "several pieces of aircraft equipment caught fire." "The fires have been extinguished," the ministry said. "There are no casualties among military personnel or civilian staff."
The Defense Ministry also claimed that "some of the perpetrators of the attacks have been detained." Some pro-war bloggers also chose to downplay the scale of the Ukrainian attacks. VC"I spoke with people in the know, and they say that, while the reputational damage is certainly significant, the material loss is not," pro-war propagandist Alexei Zhivov wrote on Telegram. "The forces and resources needed to continue the military campaign are available.
Fundamentally, nothing will change."He added that Ukrainian "bombardments can't bring anyone to their knees."

⸻
1. The Crimean Bridge: Russia’s Jugular Vein
• Symbolic Significance: For Putin, it’s a showcase of Russian might and his personal authority over “New Russia.”
• Supply Hub: If the bridge is compromised, so is the Kremlin’s capacity to sustain its southern operations.
⸻
2. Underwater Detonation: ‘Spider Web’ Op Unfolds
June 1, Pre-dawn: An SBU-led operation, months in the making, reached its climax. Unmanned or diver-controlled submersible drones had reportedly planted 1,100 kg of TNT-equivalent explosives on or near the bridge’s underwater supports.
• First Explosion: At 04:44, a massive blast shook the structure’s pillars. Vital support elements buckled.
• Second Explosion: Hours later, a follow-up detonation caused additional chaos. Roadway closures and shipping bans in the area.
• Multilayered Attack: Beyond the bombs, Ukrainian forces launched or faked additional drone threats—ranging from possible anti-air missiles at sea to rumored aerial drones—tying up Russian defenses.
Key Takeaway: This was no simple sabotage. Ukraine’s multi-pronged approach combined submersible charges, intelligence, and protective cover, breaching multiple layers of Russian security.
⸻
3. Why Mission Succeeded Despite ‘Fortress’ Security
Russia considers the Kerch Bridge a top-tier asset—defended by anti-air systems (S-400, Pantsir), anti-sabotage vessels, underwater hydroacoustic sensors, and armed patrols.
• Months of Planning: Ukraine’s intelligence got their hands on original bridge design docs. They studied structural weak points, ran infiltration rehearsals, and exploited blind spots in Russian sea/air patrols.
• Deceptive Tactics: The possibility of local saboteurs or disguised vessels inside Kerch waters circumvented the “impenetrable” perimeter.
• Russia’s Complacency: Believing prior attacks were one-offs, the Kremlin likely underestimated Ukraine’s capacity for an underwater infiltration.
