Ukraine war latest: 230 Ukrainians freed from Russian captivity in large-scale prisoner exchange. Over 200 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) were returned from Russian captivity on Jan. 3, 2024. It marks Ukraine's largest prisoner exchange since the start of the full-scale war.

Previous prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia took place in August. After that, Russia refused to exchange prisoners in an alleged effort to turn Ukrainian families of POWs against the country's authorities, according to Ukrainian officials. On Telegram, Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets wrote that it was a "very difficult return (of POWs)."

Among the returned Ukrainians are personnel from Ukraine's Armed Forces, Territorial Defense Forces, National Guard, border guards, and a police officer, as well as six civilians, the headquarters said. "These are the defenders of the Azovstal steel plant, Snake Island, and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Among them a combat medic…

Many soldiers were captured on the first day of the (full-scale) war," Lubinets wrote. It is the 49th prisoner swap conducted after Russia launched its all-out war, bringing the total number of freed defenders to 2,828, according to Lubenets. Among those returned were those who had the official POW status, confirmed through the International Committee of the Red Cross, and those Ukrainian personnel who were considered missing.

As Lockheed Martin-made F-16s have been deeply upgraded. Yes, they represent a major boost in air-defense and ground-attack capability for the beleaguered Ukrainian air force. No, these particular jets are not a long-term solution to Ukraine’s aerial needs.

After a few hundred hours of hard flying that further stresses their aging airframes, the ex-Dutch jets might become unsafe for their pilots. Planes might rack up those hours in just a couple of years. (For ONLY few year).

As Russia’s wider war in Ukraine grinds toward its third year, with no signs of slowing – to say nothing of ending – it’s time for planners in Kyiv to think long-term. What jets should the Ukrainian air force ask for, or buy, to succeed the weary F-16s?

The Warhead of russia’s Kinzhal Aeroballistic Hypersonic Missile Was Neutralized in Kiev (Photo)

In Kyiv, sappers of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine carried out the neutralization of the warhead of the russia’s Kynzhal aeroballistic hypersonic missile. This was reported in the press service of the department on Telegram.

Specialists said that they were working on the disposal of a dangerous object in the Shevchenkivskyi District of the Ukrainian capital.

Pyrotechnicians of the Mobile Rescue Center conducted a successful operation. "We continue to serve the Ukrainian people with honor and take care of our citizens!" the post says. As Defense Express reported, on the night of January 2, 2024, a significant aerial attack unfolded, reminiscent of a similar attack on December 29, 2023.

The enemy employed a diverse array of weapons, targeting critical infrastructure, industrial complexes, civilian and military areas. The epicenter of this attack was the capital of Ukraine.

The enemy utilized a total of 99 airstrike means, incorporating various missile types. In a joint effort, the Ukrainian Air Force, in collaboration with units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, successfully intercepted and downed 72 air targets. This included 10 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles, 59 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles and 3 Kalibr cruise missiles.

In just a month of operating the Patriot air defense system, Ukrainian military managed to successfully intercept over 80 air targets, including Iskander, Kh-47 Kinzhal, and S-400 ballistic missiles

Commander of the 96th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade Serhii Yaremenko told journalists how Patriot anti-aircraft/anti-missile systems work for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The interview he gave to ArmyInform reveals multiple interesting details.

First of all, we should take note of how quickly Ukrainian servicemen pulled out the training course on Patriot systems. According to Yaremenko, the entire course lasted only three months, which is three-four times shorter than the standard time of preparing personnel to work with this sophisticated equipment.

The two classic systems practically were meant for each other. The Soviet-designed ZU-23-2 is a side-by-side pair of manually-aimed 23-millimeter cannons firing six-ounce projectiles a mile or farther at a sustained rate of 400 rounds per minute. It’s a powerful and versatile weapon with air-defense and ground-support applications.

The American-designed M-113 is a 14-ton aluminum box with a 275-horsepower diesel engine and space for two crew and 11 passengers. What M-113 lacks in armor protection, it makes up for with space, mobility and versatility.

Pile on armor and a turret, and you can transform an M-113 into a crude fighting vehicle. Add a ZU-23-2, and you get a highly-mobile air-defense and infantry-support vehicle. The Egyptian and Lebanese militaries, Hezbollah and the Kurdish YPG militia all have operated their own ZU-23-2-armed M-113s.

Those Explosives-laden drones are everywhere all the time in Ukraine, and Both sides in Russia’s wider war are scrambling to improvise more drone-defenses.

For the territorial air-defense teams that help to protect Ukrainian cities, that has meant dragging all available ZU-23-2s out of storage and deploying them as-is or fixing them to trucks.

The ZU-23-2s work just fine. There’s footage of Ukrainian territorials, positioned along the likeliest approach vectors for Russian Shahed drones, filling the air with machine-gun and cannon fire—and shooting down the passing Shaheds.

In attaching ZU-23-2s to M-113s, the Ukrainians make these simple-but-effective guns even more mobile.... Clapping

Ukraine's 60 New F-16 Fighting Falcons: Can They Make a Difference?

After months of denials, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, and the Netherlands stepped forward and committed up to 60 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. The United States gave the green light for the export, and the United Kingdom stepped in to help train the first Ukrainian pilots.

But is it enough?

Is this relatively small number of aircraft going to make a difference in a large-scale conventional conflict against Russia that can field hundreds of aircraft?.

F-16s over Ukraine -- The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a multi-role fighter jet capable of both air combat and air-to-ground operations. With the ability to reach 1,500 miles per hour and an operational ceiling of 50,000 feet, the F-16 fighter jet can make a difference on the battlefield based on its agility, sensors, and munitions.

Overall, the four European countries have committed up to 60 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. The exact numbers are sketchy since countries like the Netherlands have committed to sending F-16s to Ukraine but haven’t disclosed if that means their whole fleet of 42 aircraft or a fraction of that number against Russian air defenses. Then, used wisely, the 60 F-16s can help the Ukrainian forces achieve temporary air superiority over the battlefield when they need it the most, for example, in the opening hours and days of a large-scale offensive.

The F-16s will undoubtedly upgrade Ukrainian Air Force’s aging arsenal of Soviet- and Russian-made fighter jets. But whether they make a difference in the conflict largely depends on how the Ukrainians decide to use them.

Russian prisoners-of war expressed their gratitude towards Ukrainian forces for their humane treatment, Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said on Facebook on Jan. 6, commenting on a video of his recent conversation with Russian POWs awaiting exchange.

"Another confirmation of Ukraine's strict adherence to the Geneva Conventions,” Lubinets wrote.

“It is important that the Russians once again said that they had no complaints and thanked us for our humanity.”

When asked how they were treated in captivity, the POWs replied: "good," "normal." "humane," "arms and legs intact".

"We somehow expected a different attitude, not so positive,” one of the POWs said on camera.

“They didn't humiliate our honor and dignity, they treated us normally.”

The prisoners also mentioned that they were allowed to contact their families, correspond through letters, and receive medical care.

Lubinets, for his part, urged the Russians to share their positive experiences when they return home and expressed his desire for “exactly the same conditions for Ukrainian POWs.” He also wished that the Russians would stop coming to Ukraine with weapons.

224 Ukrainian POWs and six civilians have returned home after a prisoner exchange with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Jan. 3, including 130 soldiers, 55 national guardsmen, 38 border guardsmen, one police officer, and six civilians who had been illegally detained.

Lubinets later added that the number included defenders of Azovstal and Mariupol more broadly, as well as of Snake Island, whose defiant stand against the Russian Navy has been a rallying cry for Ukrainians since the first weeks of the full-scale invasion.

He further stated that Ukraine strives to exchange all its citizens and continues to work on this issue. This was the 49th official exchange, with 2,828 prisoners exchanged in total, and the largest since February 24, 2022. It was the first publicly announced prisoner swap in six months.

Freed Ukrainian prisoners-of-war from the latest swap all evidenced extreme amounts of weight loss, and require medical and psychological treatment after likely being tortured in captivity, Lubinets noted.

Ukrainian missiles and UAVs bypass Russian air defence and hit targets in Crimea – ISW

A Russian military blogger argued that Russian forces need to improve planning and coordination at the tactical and operational levels so that Russian offensive operations can break out of the current positional warfare in Ukraine.

Western provision of air defence systems and missiles to Ukraine in the near- and medium-term remain crucial for Ukraine’s development of a defence industrial base (DIB) that can sustain war effort against Russia in the long-term.

Russian and Ukrainian forces continued positional engagements along the entire line of contact on 6 January. Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) continues efforts to incentivize service with the Russian military by advertising support for housing.

Russian occupation authorities are struggling to provide basic services to residents of occupied areas of Ukraine.

Russia’s recent mobilisation of 170,000 new troops brings the total strength of its armed forces to around 1.3 million. So Zelenskyy’s announcement may simply be an attempt to level the playing field in terms of troop numbers.

NEW RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE IN 2024?
Taken together, all three of these possible explanations also indicate a concern about the likelihood of a new Russian offensive in 2024. Whatever the ultimate Russian war aims might be, Moscow’s territorial claim to the whole of the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia is one of the more concrete – and hitherto unachieved – objectives.

With the Kremlin’s relative military strength growing, denying Russian President Putin this success – which he is likely to want to achieve before his all-but-certain re-election in March and likely inauguration in May – will require a serious Ukrainian defence effort.

In turn, this implies that the Ukrainian leadership is currently less concerned about strategic prospects, but is motivated by the need to mobilise all available resources for this effort.

The two complementary Bills regarding on mobilisation which were submitted by the government to parliament on Dec 30, 2023, indicate that Zelenskyy and his inner circle are serious about this. At the same time, if adopted and implemented, the new approach to mobilisation will also add significant strain for already stretched the Ukrainian state institutions and society.

Kyiv’s Majority Of Attacks Go Astray has unleashed a drone war on Russia. Moscow, however, wields an invisible weapon to blunt Kyiv’s army of drones – superior electronic warfare technologies. These “invisible scissors” of Russia, experts feel, are the reason why Ukraine’s drones have struggled to make any significant impact. As both sides have been working on electronic warfare technology aimed at jamming, diverting enemy drones guided missiles. But Moscow has lead of nearly a decade.

While Ukraine’s request for military hardware has been considered during war that is inching towards its third year, request for superior EW technologies has evoked little interest from Western allies with on sufficient EW protection, Ukrainian forces are easily targeted by unmanned aerial vehicle explosions, bomb-dropping drones, and drone-guided artillery attacks. EW is described as key to breaking stalemate on the frontline. Russia has been using EW aggressively to divert Ukraine’s precision-guided weapons, such as Excalibur artillery rounds and HIMARS rockets. The data emerging from the battlefield indicates growing role of drone strikes against Russian targets along the 600-mile front.

On many days in Nov between 50% & 70% of all damaged or destroyed Russian equipment was attributed to FPV drones, figures published by analyst. The omnipresence of drones has been the death knell for tl long-awaited counteroffensive of Ukraine in 2023, which failed to make any significant territorial gains, & the armored vehicles were destroyed even before they could do any significant damage.

Dominating the electronic spectrum to jam the adversary’s drones and making drones foolproof against disruption has, thus, become crucial on the battlefield. A dominance in electronic warfare will allow one to subvert the enemy while remaining unharmed. As reported by the EurAsian Times, Russia has claimed to have developed a ‘magic radio’ for FPV (First Person View) drones that will make them highly resistant to jamming in the latest technological development for drones.

FPV drones are operated manually and do not rely on GPS satellite navigation, which reduces their vulnerability to electronic warfare tactics. Nevertheless, in the event of an enemy jamming any radio frequency the drone utilizes, video transmission signals and piloting commands will be interrupted.

Mykola Kolesnyk, commander of a Ukrainian drone unit, was quoted by the Financial Times as saying that electronic warfare duels with the Russian forces were becoming “fierce and relentless.” He described them as “invisible scissors that cut off the connection of a device that is remotely controlled.”

Col Ivan Pavlenko, Chief of EW and cyber warfare at Ukraine’s general staff, underscored the importance of EW and stressed that the allies should deliver more capabilities to “suppress or spoof” the satellite guidance system (GNSS) of Russia’s guided missiles and drones. He also pointed out that the sophisticated Russian EW systems need high-tech components like amplifiers, synthesizers, and software, and Western countries need to impose sanctions on those. Continue....beginning of war, Ukraine was stuck with Soviet-era EW systems. In March, Ukraine was flummoxed by its GPS-guided Excalibur shells missing their targets, which was later credited to the Russian jamming. The JDAM-guided bombs supplied by the US also met a similar fate most worrying development for Ukrainian forces was Russia’s ability to counter army of Ukrainian army drones that has been doing Intelligence, Surveillance, & Reconnaissance, besides taking out targets like tanks & command nodes. The drones used by Ukrainian forces are cheap, and country is making them in large quantities. But Russia has managed to spoof their guidance systems or jam their radio-control links with their operators. At times, Ukraine has lost as many as 2,000 drones per week to Russian electronic warfare drones loiter aimlessly until their batteries run out, and they crash to the ground.

The technology is yet to evolve to make small drones immune to Russian jamming and spoofing. Now Russia is winning at the numbers game. The battlefield is now teeming with Russian drones, and Moscow is deploying two drones to every drone deployed by Kyiv.Ukraine has deployed a nationwide electronic warfare system, Pokrova. It was announced by Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Ukraine, in his essay titled “Modern Positional Warfare, how to Win It.”

Info about system is sketchy, but its primary goal is “replacing the satellite radio navigation field (“spoofing”), suppressing satellite radio navigation along entire line of contact and in most parts of Ukraine.” The Russia’s shahed-136 missiles will become less effective if a unified GPS/GLONASS suppression field is set up. The Pokrova electronic warfare system should also reduce the accuracy of Russian cruise missiles fired into Ukraine. Now Ukraine insists that the soon-to-be-delivered F-16 fighter jets provided by Western allies should be equipped with modern EW systems.

Fighting against technologically inferior adversaries, like Iraq and the Taliban, electronic warfare (EW) had become a forgotten discipline for the Western armed forces. However, the Ukraine War has brought EW back into the limelight.

Ukrainian intelligence obtains hundreds of gigabytes of Russian classified data about Orlan drone manufacturer. The facility produces military equipment and technology used by the Russian army in the war against Ukraine. The 'STC' manufactures various modifications of the 'Orlan' drones, a range of radio-electronic warfare and reconnaissance means, as well as other military products.

The company has been under U.S. sanctions since 2016, and in 2022, it faced restrictions in the EU, the UK, Canada, and Japan. In the following year, Ukraine and Switzerland also imposed sanctions against it.

The array of information transferred to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine includes documentation for 194 nomenclature units: drawings, technical specifications, patents, software, and more. This includes both existing and prospective military developments. According to preliminary estimates, the value of the obtained data could reach $1.5 billion.

The intelligence assures that this is a significant blow to Russia. The mentioned archive is already being used to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and weaken the aggressor state.

Speculations, Ukraine could get F-16 fighter jets as early as the spring of 2024. To Kyiv must prepare ‘customized’ airfields to fly the fighting falcons. As First Deputy Defense Minister Lieutenant General Oleksandr Pavlyuk said it's carrying out a thorough assessment of its airfields to accommodate the combat-capable fighter jet. At same time Ukrainian engineers & pilots have been receiving training in West to fly F-16s to integrate those multirole F-16 fighter into armed forces structure in line with the international Military-Air Coalition and locally.

“We are working on implementing Fast Track by end of 2024. Assessment of airfields for multi-role fighters has been conducted within its framework. pilots & engineers have been undergoing training on F-16 since August 2023. Pavliuk said. He stated intricate & rigorous work is being done in Ukraine to prepare infrastructure, secure it, use air defense systems, and address several other concerns. This starkly contrasts with flying Soviet-origin aircraft like Su-24, Su-25, Su-27 &  MiG-29s that Ukrainian Air Force has extensively deployed beginning of the conflict in 2022. Since Ukraine intensified its pitch for F-16 fighter jets from its NATO partners, military analysts have emphasized it would not be durable for Ukraine to operate F-16s. Experts warned as early as April 2023 that Ukrainian Air Force would need specially constructed airbases since it is so delicate, and Russia may be able to locate and attack those locations. You can read a detailed analysis by EurAsian Times here.

At the time, Justin Bronk, an air-warfare expert with British think tank Royal United Service Institute (RUSI), explained the F-16s needed particular infrastructure as it has a large air inlet beneath the nose that “sucks everything from the ground directly into it.” F-16s generally require extremely hygienic, extremely well-maintained air bases. Bronk said F-16 is designed with an exceptional thrust-to-weight ratio, and its landing gear is “fairly lightweight,” meaning that “there is no more weight on jet than there needs to be.” But he claimed that the airfields and bases in Russia and Ukraine are essentially archaic and unfit for the F-16 Fighting Falcon or certain other Western planes.

Bronk continued, “You’d be looking at resurfacing work on runways and possibly extension work, all of which are highly visible” to Moscow’s sources on the ground and to Russia’s satellites. According to military experts TASS spoke with in August last year, Ukraine does not currently have infrastructure needed to house F-16 fighter jets. They warned if attempts are made to develop such airfields and other facilities, they will be destroyed during construction even before they are completed.

Ukraine has come a long way since & admission about assessing improving airfields suggests that the challenges are being worked out, perhaps with Western assistance. However Ukrainian minister did not give many details about nature of work on these airfields.

Russia, on its part, continues to assert that the delivery of F-16s to Ukraine would not be a game changer, banking on fact that most of its long-range missiles put almost all of the Ukrainian airfields in the firing line. It has also gone so far as to warn if these jets launch from a neighboring NATO country, Moscow would retaliate. However, it will still be some time before Ukraine receives its NATO partners’ first batch of F-16s.

Ukraine Captures at Least 41 Russian Soldiers From Crimea. Ukrainian representatives said many of them are Ukrainian citizens. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) as well as sources in Crimea report the capture of at least 41 Russian servicemen from the peninsula. According to info from the Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, the captured soldiers are likely to be citizens of Ukraine.

“The capture of at least 41 servicemen of the Russian Federation from occupied Crimea has been confirmed, most of them are probably citizens of Ukraine,” the agency said in a Facebook post. In addition, the Presidential Representation in the ARC reported burial of at least 632 soldiers of the Russian army on occupied peninsula, 475 of whom were probably citizens of Ukraine.

Earlier, Kyiv Post reported Ukrainian military destroyed Russian ammunition depots & several radar stations in temporarily occupied Crimea.
Elsewhere, Russian soldiers do not seem to be fairing well on battlefield in other areas of Ukraine either. On Monday, Ukraine’s military released footage appearing to show Russian soldiers shooting themselves dead during fighting.

In the 9-second clip, three Russian soldiers are seen beside an infantry fighting vehicle (BMP).
Two lie down, while one sits in the middle. At the sixth second, soldier on the left fires a shot, followed by two shots from soldier on the right.

The command did not specify the location of the incident or the fate of the third Russian soldier.

While Kyiv Post could not independently verify the video's authenticity, Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko reposted the Zahid command's publication on his Telegram channel.

In the comments section, commentators expressed little sympathy for the soldiers.

One person wrote: “And was it necessary for them to go to Ukraine?”

Another said: “So they couldn't shoot themselves at home? It was necessary to come to Ukraine?”

Another commentator asked: “why they don't surrender,” adding: “Shouldn't the instinct of self-preservation kick in?”

Clues to the answer can be found in the testimony of Russian POWs interviewed last year by Kyiv Post.

Putin cannot f..k care about them been kill or one (1) man said, he was told by his commanders that it's better to use a grenade to kill himself and any enemies approaching rather than surrender and face “torture.”
