A village 20 miles west of main Ukrainian salient trust into Russia’s Kursk Oblast. 6-weeks ago, a powerful Ukrainian force—dozen of battalions with 8-experienced brigades—invaded Kursk & quickly gained control of 400 sq miles of Russian soil.
If it was unclear why Ukrainians also invade around Novyi Put, it’s a bit clearer now. Backed by tanks, covered by Ukrainian air force warplanes lobbing building-demolishing glide bombs, a Ukrainian tactical group apparently anchored by 95th Air Assault Brigade is slicing right as it advances past Novyi Put through the southern blocks of the nearest Russian town, Vesoloe.
That is to say, Ukrainian troops are turning toward main Kursk salient. If attacking northeast from Novyi can connect with Ukrainians in the main salient, they’ll cut off potentially thousands of Russians between them and the border.
But it’s possible Ukrainians don’t have enough well-equipped forces to complete the maneuver.

Ukrainian Khorne Group, a team of drone operators supporting Novyi attack, hinted at the encirclement objective at start of the assault past Novyi Put “We've advanced into new areas, by kilometers, into Russia,” the group stated on Friday. “A group of Russian conscripts numbering in the thousands is at risk of being encircled.”

If the Ukrainians are indeed trying to surround Russian forces, the local geography facilitates the move. The Seym River forms a natural boundary along most of the northern edge of the potential pocket bounded on the left and right flanks by advancing Ukrainian forces.

Ukraine Closes in on Long-Range JASSM Missile Deal With US. Cited by Reuters said Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSMs) will be part of a weapons package that is expected to be announced this fall, pending a final decision.

Retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, a former commander of the U.S. Army Europe, who has repeatedly called for Washington to commit to providing Kyiv with long-range weapons, welcomed the prospect of the missiles being given to Ukraine, but pointed out there had already been too much of a delay.

"I'm glad, they're considering it, but highlights the utter failure to deliver these capabilities more than two years ago," he told Newsweek.

For at least fifth time in a little more than six mths, Russian troops gathered out in open for training or inspection within range of Ukraine’s U.S.A.-made artillery rockets. And for @least fifth time in a little more than six mths, Ukrainian batteries hit the assembled Russians with rockets packed with hundreds of grenade-sized submunitions—inflicting awful carnage. The most recent strike apparently took place this week, at what seems to be outdoor shooting range just outside Petrovskiy district of Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine 15 miles from the front line.

A video from aftermath of the attack depicts at least a dozen dead Russian troops plus wrecked vehicles, strongly implying Ukrainian rocket or rockets—likely GPS-guided M30/31s fired by wheeled High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems—rained down as the Russians were training.
It’s happened before—and in the same area. There’s a roughly 100-square-mile patch of Donetsk Oblast, south of Donetsk city, where there’s a high concentration of Russian troops—and a lot of lazy Russian commanders. Ukraine’s HIMARS have struck Russian training grounds in this area at least three times since February, killing around 100 people.

Two more Ukrainian rocket strikes same period—one each in southern & northeastern Ukraine—added @least 150 trainees to death toll. How Ukrainian army pulled off these strikes is no secret. Drones are everywhere all the time, tens of miles, both directions along e 700-mile front line of Russia’s 30-mth war on Ukraine & all of Russian-occupied Ukraine is within the 57-mile range of the 650-pound M30/31 rocket or the 190-mile range of the 3,700-pound M39 rocket—the latter fired by Ukraine’s tracked M270 launchers.

The Ukrainians know where the Russian troops are, and if that location is within range (15–92 kilometers) of the launcher, then the M30A2 (or any old M30A1) would be enormously deadly against troops in the open. M30 rocket has a warhead with about 182,000 pre-formed tungsten fragments, to give area effects. The system uses a proximity sensor fuze mode with a 10 meter height of burst.

The M31 isn’t really meant for troops in the open. Each rocket has a single 200-pound (91 kg) high-explosive warhead with a multi-mode fuze that added airburst to the original point detonation and delay settings. The M31 is more effective against equipment or structures.

Both rockets can use GPS or Inertial Navigation. The GPS guidance is extremely accurate but can be jammed with the proper equipment (which Russia does have) inertial guidance system is somewhat accurate but cannot be jammed.

The ammo dump in Toropets reportedly held large stocks of small arms rounds, mortar shells, artillery rockets and long-range ballistic missiles potentially including Russian-made Iskanders and North Korean KN-23s.

According to the Ukrainian general staff, the dump in Tikhoretsk “is one of the three largest occupying ammunition storage bases and is one of the keys in the logistical system of Russian troops.” The general staff estimated 2,000 tons of ammo, including North Korean-made rounds, were in the Tikhoretsk dump when the drones struck. The towering fireball resulting from the impact seems to confirm that estimate. The initial Toropets raid and the later Tikhoretsk raid were both big enough to register as small earthquakes and also draw the attention of NASA’s fire-spotting satellites.

The back-to-back ammo dump raids signal a shift in Ukraine’s campaign of deep strikes targeting strategic targets inside Russia. For many months, officials in Kyiv have pleaded with their European and American counterparts for permission to use donated long-range munitions—British Storm Shadow and French SCALP-EG cruise missiles and American Army Tactical Missile System rockets—against targets deep inside Russia, including munitions stockpiles.

Ukraine destruction of major Russian ammunition depot on Sept. 18 could significantly disrupt Russian military operations in coming mths. The Institute for Study of War (ISW) reported on Sept. 22 that the loss of thousands of munitions stored in the warehouse near Toropets, in Russia’s Tver region, may have a long-term impact on Russia’s ability to maintain its military operations at a consistent pace.

Ukraine’s Special Services said last week that the drone strike on Toropets ammo depot was a joint operation by Ukraine’s Military Intelligence (HUR), Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and Special Operations Forces (SSO).

The warehouse was home to missiles for Iskander operational-tactical missile systems, Tochka-U tactical missile systems, KABs, and artillery ammunition. According to Estonian intelligence chief Colonel Ants Kiviselg, the strike caused the explosion of 30,000 tons of ammo, equivalent to 750,000 artillery shells.Given that Russian forces typically fire 10,000 shells at Ukrainian positions each week, Kiviselg estimates that the strike destroyed enough stockpiles to last two to three months.

While it is unclear, the 30,000 tons included all types of munitions, attack clearly dealt a heavy blow to Russian reserves, the U.S. think-tank, ongoing Ukrainian strikes on Russian logistical hubs are expected to create widespread operational challenges for Russian forces

Other mews: Ukrainian Paratroopers Breach Russian Defenses in New Kursk Offensive Push. The report doesn’t specify the exact location or timing of the Kursk front breach, but Kyiv Post using NASA FIRMS data, suggest it likely near to Glushkovo area disruptions could compel Russian military leadership to reorganize & disperse supply chains within Russia to mitigate further losses.

Zelenskyy appeals to global south to help ‘force Russia into peace’. Ukrainian president accuses Putin of violating UN foundations and says war cannot be ended by talks alone. In a forceful speech to the UN security council, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on a broad alliance of nations to “force Russia into peace”, saying that Vladimir Putin has violated the foundations of the United Nations and that the war “can’t be conquered by talks” alone.

Addressing the council, of which Russia is a permanent member, Zelenskyy accused Moscow of committing “international crimes” by targeting Ukrainian civilians and energy infrastructure, and claimed he had proof that Putin is plotting to target three Ukrainian nuclear power plants to further degrade the country’s energy grid.

After thanking Ukraine’s allies for their support, Ukrainian leader appealed to countries further afield, calling on Brazil, India and countries across Africa & Latin America, to increase pressure on Russia to halt the war, saying “all [countries] are equally important for peace without exceptions”.

Many of those countries have in some way, economic or close diplomatic ties with Russia, an given greater credence to Putin’s that Russia was provoked into the war by the west. “We know some in the world want to talk to Putin,”To meet, to talk, to speak. But what could thet hear from him? That he’s upset be'cos we are exercising our right to defend our people? Or that he wants to keep the war and terror going, just so no one thinks he was wrong?”

He added: “It’s insane.” He later this week will travel to White House to meet with Joe Biden and discuss his “victory plan” – a roadmap Ukraine to end war with greater western support. In his speech, he said that further pressure was needed to conclude a peace with Russia after it had been “doing things that cannot possibly be justified under the UN charter”.

“That’s why this war can’t be conquered by talks,” Zelenskyy said. “Action is needed … Putin has broken so many international laws and rules that he won’t stop. Russia can only be forced into peace, and that is exactly what’s needed, forcing Russia into peace as the soul aggressor in this war, the soul violator of the UN charter.”

The U.S. confirms the transfer of AGM-154 glide bombs for the F-16 fighter of the Ukrainian Air Force. Shortly be4 welcoming President Zelensky to White House, U.S. govt confirmed shipment of a new military aid package worth $8b to Ukraine, includes wide array of items, including AGM-154 JSOW glide bombs for F-16 fighter jets by Western allies to Ukrainian Air Force. Notably, most of package will consist of materials from current inventories of U.S. Armed Forces, aimed at accelerating their transfer.

Important to remember that these are air-to-ground bombs without a propulsion system, but they can achieve ranges of up to 70 miles when launched from high altitudes.

It is remarkably for U.S. President Joe Biden: “For nearly 3-years, the US has mobilized world to support people of Ukraine in their defense of freedom against Russian aggression & has been one of my administration’s top priorities to provide Ukraine with support it needs to prevail. (.!.) During that time, Ukraine won Battle of Kyiv, reclaimed more than half of the territory that Russia took at beginning of the war, safeguarded its sovereignty and independence.  Smile

A Hundred Russian Vehicles Attacked Toward The Oskil River. At Least 20 Didn’t Come Back. Russians are trying to cut local Ukrainian forces in half.

The effort is extremely costly for Russians. They captured the village of Pischane, 5-miles east of river, back in July. Now they’re trying so far failing—to reach the river near village of Hlushkivka. On Thursday, a powerful Russian force with around a hundred armored vehicles attacked in three directions, targeting Ukrainian positions north and south of the salient.

In the north, Ukrainian brigades and battalions anchored by the 77th Air Mobile Brigade fought back, apparently in the usual way: with drones, artillery and anti-tank missiles. In the south, the Ukrainian 92nd Assault Brigade also held the line. Ukraine’s 40th Artillery Brigade is close enough to the Pischane salient to fire on Russian troops anywhere in the salient.

Russian losses were heavy. In the south, the 92nd Mechanized Brigade claimed it destroyed 14 vehicles including three tanks, five BMP fighting vehicles, an unspecified armored personnel carrier, an MTLB armored tractor, three trucks and a golf cart.
