Actually even during LKY's time the West always knew that he was an autocratic leader.

The difference is that back then during LKY's prime, there weren't that many Western-educated Asian leaders who could speak and debate Westerners in English on the same footing. LKY was respected for his personal gravitas, not because he claimed to be a democratic leader. He got tapped on by US presidents from Nixon onwards because he was at the time probably the ONLY Han Chinese Asian leader who could "code switch" between an Asian and Western mentality, not to mention at least know enough Mandarin to translate and interpret his own interactions and understandings of Chinese history/culture to Westerners. LKY and SG played the midwife role in China's opening up particularly during the Deng Xiaoping era. We taught China to be the economy it is today. We helped facilitate the West to take a chance and invest in China.

Those were the days when the West prized "Chinese Whisperers". That was Singapore's niche: to be the "Western Gateway to Asia". A majority-Han Chinese country that had a significant English-educated population by virtue of its British colonial history and LKY's push to educate Singaporeans in English. In Western eyes, LKY was an "enlightened autocrat/despot", whose Cambridge education enabled him to show that he would not be a pushover to Western pressure simply by lacking understanding of the English language or Western ways of thinking and politics.

Our Parliament is fully aware of it's position as a democratic country, but because it is a 'one man' rule that had hindered view of full democracy.........it is such a shame.......
