ASEAN tilts towards whoever complements them in their future development. China, being a full spectrum economy from top to low end plus itself a developing country, naturally has an advantage compared to the US which is mostly life sciences, financial markets, IT and tertiary services.

Another important aspect is security used to be one of the key selling points US has to offer, nowadays with no direct enemy, cold war or immediate threats from anyone, this proposition is increasingly moot in ASEAN.

This is one of the intended outcomes of maximum restrain by the Chinese. For e.g. in theory China can beat the living shiit out of the Philippines at SCS in less than a day yet they continue to dance with the Pinoys to the point of angering their own nationalist citizens. Ditto the likes of Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, Malaysia - each of these countries have tried to pull a fast one at some point or another, yet these flip flops are tolerated and China continues to cooperate as long as OB markers are not touched.

This is where the strategic patience really pays off and now we are seeing not only the elite class in ASEAN flipping over, but the general populace as well. Too many people hero worship "garang" rhetoric and military actions produced by the likes of US and Russia, yet despite all the drama they don't seem to be able to reverse their trend of general decline for the past few decades.
