Why President Clinton, Biden and Trump do not believe Singapore is a democratic country?

As Singaporeans, is Singapore a democratic country? Yes or No?

Should consider changing our pledge "to be" a democratic society asap.

Any ideas

Why not invited...?
Then don't go, Why question so much?

"Singapore’s exclusion from the guest list of the ongoing US Summit for Democracy is not the first time that the US has snubbed the Republic.

When Bill Clinton, a Democrat like current US President Joe Biden, was president, he also did not invite Singapore when he launched an equivalent gathering of democracies,  said Ambassador-at-Large Tommy Koh."

Today's National Pledge ...
to build a democratic society

So, "to build" reflects Singapore is not a democratic country yet.

Simple straight forward directives like imposed  sanctions on Russia, Singapore still looking for loopholes to benefit from it.

Next, granting Regional HQ solely for tax avoidance for self benefits had indirectly, created win/loss which is depriving the other countries from building better infrastructure and causing cutbacks in improvement in social and welfare system

the list goes on..

It's not that Presidents Clinton, Biden, or Trump explicitly stated that Singapore is not a democratic country. However, there are some aspects of Singapore's political system that differ significantly from Western democratic norms, which might lead to such perceptions.

Singapore is often described as a **"hybrid regime"** or **"illiberal democracy"**[43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054](https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Newsroom/Press-St...1daa162054 "1"). While it holds regular elections and has a multiparty system, there are concerns about **restrictions on civil liberties**, **media control**, and **limits on political opposition**[43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054](https://www.mfa.gov.sg/Newsroom/Press-St...1daa162054 "1"). These factors might contribute to the perception that Singapore does not fully align with the democratic standards expected in Western countries.

US MNC investments in Singapore is the highest in Asean.

Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement between US and Singapore.

That's enough for a tiny 700 sq km island nation...🤭🤣

Our democracy is determined by Singaporean. Not the American and Australian like yourself. 😁

The fundamental question you should ask is - why should we care whether these guys consider us "democratic"?

Secondly, the US in its current state is a mockery of democracy (at least in a classical liberal sense), so they aren't even any position to consider whether others are democratic in the first place.

Your definition of "democracy" is not recognised internationally or UN

About UN Membership

How does a country become a Member of the United Nations?

Membership in the Organization, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, “is open to all peace-loving States that accept the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able to carry out these obligations”.

States are admitted to membership in the United Nations by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.

What has Singapore done for UN?

Our commitments to the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System include placing planning officers, military observers, medical personnel and police officers on standby to support UN peacekeeping missions.

Singapore's military and police have, since 1989, taken part in 17 peacekeeping and observer missions. 26 Dec 2024

Singapore became the 117th member state of the United Nations (UN) on 21 September 1965.
This was an important milestone for the country as membership in the UN conferred international recognition of Singapore as a sovereign and independent state.

Don't you dare to gaslight Singapore's status in UN and malign our decades of efforts contribution in world's peace and the Rule of Law.
