To cut open  a 100km long canal to save 1200km of  journey time seem like a good deal.

It's much safer going thru inland canal than navigating narrow Malacca Straits.

Widen the canal for bigger containers to sail thru.

The construction is not that difficult.
The main obstacle is maintaining the kra canal. 
The whole stretch of the canal will be guarded by Thai. High cost in security force.
Nobody will help them. Don’t forget there are terriorists in Southern Thai. Piracy is another big headache.
