SG professed political neutrality, then in the next breath joined a chorus of countries in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It drew the ire of Russia who then threatened to take punitive actions against those nations, such as cutting off gas to Europe which resulted in soaring energy costs there.
SG, neutral observers noted, was punching above its weight and getting too big for its boots. To remain really neutral in the international arena where political tensions between superpowers are high, tiny countries need to practice the tactful diplomacy of keeping their mouths shut. The geopolitics of cold war are often complex.
We do not sit on a stool with four 3-inch legs in United Nations meetings while the US, China, India sit on a leather chair with a high back.
When we speak, we do not speak "above our weight" but as equals. Yup! we do not go there to remain quiet as you do seem to want wor.
But if countries are told to place a card in front listing down their weapons, what they are capable of doing when they are not so happy, and we list down a few terrex which were mercifully returned to us, while some other countries say through their CARD "Look here! I am big! See this word here...nucl..." then we might as well not attend, stay at home and watch the proceedings via Zoom and at the same time be amazed at how big and powerful those countries are, and be eternally grateful that we were allowed to log in to watch.

In the end, nobody can stop anyone from speaking as equals. If Singapore wants to do that, by all means. What matters is whether we gain anything from speaking. My opinion is we should tone down on our comments on Russia.

Same reason that your boss can be very unreasonable even though he's wrong. You can speak up, but you can't be too harsh, or you're prepared to lose your job. To me, there's no benefits to being harsh on Russia.

“Punch above your weight” is an idiom meaning to try to be more successful in doing something that normally requires more power, etc than you have. I read a social media user using this idiomatic expression to describe SG’s condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While that phrase is idiomatically acceptable to those who would prefer SG to keep a low-profile around UN, it may not be acceptable to those hungry for justice. There’s a great diversity of opinion in cyberspace. A watered-down criticism of Putin has an element of ambiguity. It could be interpreted as either for or against his country.

One way of knowing where a country stands politically is seeing how it votes at the UN. Every member of the 193 member states is allowed one equal vote. There are 3 camps - those allied to Ukraine, those fighting Russia’s corner and those choosing to remain neutral to the conflict.
According to a data from the UN, there were 141 ayes (who voted in favour of a UN resolution demanding Russia withdraw its military forces from Ukraine) 5 nays (who voted against it) and 35 abstentions. The high rate of yes votes is an indication that global support for Ukraine was overwhelming.
The resolution needed needed 2/3 majority of yes votes to pass. But it’s non-binding which means it’s toothless. Nevertheless, the invasion received widespread international condemnation in the court of world opinion.
