Latest installment of this particular Groundhog Day unfolded last night when Trump announced he had had a lengthy phone call w/Russian Putin, the pair would be meeting in Budapest to Ukraine, timing was far from accidental. Zelensky is right now in Washington D.C. for a highly anticipated meeting w/Trump later today. Political momentum is on Ukraine's side — Trump's patience with Russia is running on fumes after months of the Kremlin refusing to agree to a ceasefire.
U.S. president has been mulling sending Ukraine Tomahawk cruise missiles. Already battered by Ukrainian drones, Russian oil refineries would likely face devastation from these weapons, exacerbating an ongoing fuel crisis & further hammering Russia's war economy.
The Kremlin is rattled. Economic forecasts are already dire, queues are forming at gas stations across the country, and Putin's ability to wage war seems doubtful in the long term. And then comes the phone call. Anyone with even the slightest understanding of Russia's lying, manipulation, and utter lack of will for a genuine peace deal can see what happens next. Any big announcements of U.S. support planned for today will be put on hold while Trump scopes out Putin's latest hollow offer.
Even by agreeing to the meeting, Trump is already falling for the trap and will once again be made to look like a fool. Putin has offered nothing since Day 1 of Trump's peace efforts, and has repeatedly stalled and delayed when it looked like the U.S. president was actually going to do what is needed to end the war — inflict pain on Russia, either economically or through force. In May, Western powers including the U.S. looked set to impose tough new sanctions on Russia over its consistent refusal to agree to a ceasefire. Putin suggested holding talks in Istanbul. They went nowhere.
Over summer Trump's patience began to wear thin. Threats were made. Putin suggested meeting in Alaska. Trump agreed. Then talks went nowhere. Since Russia has only escalated attacks. Here in newsroom in Kyiv we described last night’s attack had 70 kamikaze attack drones launched by Russia as "a quiet night." Trump has an opportunity today to do something that could genuinely make sure that a quiet night is as quiet as those we knew before the war. All he has to do is not fall for Putin's bullsh*t.

Ukraine and the U.S. have unveiled Artemis — a new AI-powered long-range strike drone set for mass production after successful testing announced on October 16, 2025. Developed by Ukraine in partnership with U.S. defense tech firm Auterion, the drone boasts a 1,000-mile range and an 88-pound payload, matching the best in Ukraine’s arsenal.
What sets Artemis apart is its advanced software — the Auterion Visual Navigation system and Skynode N mission computer — allowing pinpoint targeting even in GPS-denied environments. With manufacturing lines being established in Ukraine, the U.S., and Germany, the Artemis marks a pivotal shift in drone warfare and signals renewed military collaboration between Kyiv and Washington.

After 25 years in power, Vladimir Putin faces unprecedented pressure as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues into 2025. With more than 1.1 million Russian casualties and 332,000 dead and wounded this year alone, even the Kremlin can’t disguise the scale of failure. Polls show 66% of Russians favor peace talks, signaling rising discontent.
Economic sanctions, a fuel crisis, and repeated battlefield losses have left Putin isolated. Analysts warn the next two months in Donbas could define the war’s future, with failure potentially forcing a ceasefire before year’s end. Russia’s elites and citizens alike are questioning the regime’s direction — and Putin’s ability to lead through collapse.

Russian troops are suffering massive losses at the front , and although they are constantly receiving reinforcements, they are increasingly of poor quality. This was stated on Ukrainian Radio by Artem Pribylnov, a communications officer with the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
He noted that Pokrovsk has become a "complete meat grinder" for Russians.
"New units are arriving. But a Pokrovsk assault trooper on the Russian side lives on the line of contact for about a week at most. That's how long it takes him to walk from Selidovo, make camp somewhere on the southern outskirts of Shevchenkov, somehow regroup, and move on. This journey takes about a week, and within that week, the assault trooper will be destroyed," the soldier explained. He added that the quality of the enemy's personnel is not very high, and with each reinforcement it continues to decline.
"Currently, Russian occupiers are using homeless people, alcoholics, drug addicts, tuberculosis sufferers, and the like in assault groups. These people aren't very motivated, and they also have certain physical deficiencies. So, carrying a load of approximately 60 kg, they mostly drop it along the route. This happens very often because these people are unable to perform any physical exercise," he said. In such circumstances, the number of Russian soldiers captured is also high.
He also noted that attack drones currently account for 70-80% of kills. Therefore, small infantry groups are primarily used at the front. "There's no point in creating large concentrations of personnel, defensive units, or large observation posts. Because the KAB simply flies in—and then what? It's important to disperse the personnel. In our zone of responsibility, we're defending Pokrovsk, which means buildings and heights. Our personnel are holding the line and staying where they need to be," the military officer emphasized. Major Volodymyr Nazarenko, deputy commander of Ukraine's 4th Battalion Freedom Force of the 4th Brigade Rubizh said that in northern Pokrovsk sector, Russian forces use conveyor-style assaults — small infantry groups try to break through Ukrainian defenses. “Our brigade is carrying out missions in the Pokrovsk sector, in its northern part. It’s one of the hottest areas of the entire eastern front. The situation remains unchanged, as the enemy continues to use both equipment and small infantry groups, conducting conveyor-style assaults. They keep trying to advance and attack again and again,”

Against the backdrop of the ongoing war against Ukraine, discontent is increasingly being voiced within Russia itself, even among those groups the Kremlin has come to regard as loyal. A scandal erupted yesterday at a gathering of so-called war veterans in Siberia. As reported by " Agency ," combatants openly criticized the federal govt, propagandists, & Kremlin's inaction in situation regarding the humiliation of the military.
At a meeting of veterans of so-called "SVO," about a hundred occupiers spoke out against the pressure on musician Yuri Shevchuk, Ramzan Kadyrov's attacks on General Vladimir Shamanov, & behavior of TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov. They said Russian leadership's demonstrative silence is fueling a sense of betrayal among military. A certain Shimov from Omsk harshly stated that the authorities had failed to respond to Kadyrov's public insults of General Shamanov. He emphasized that the Kremlin's silence was demoralizing both the military and the youth: "How can young people respect the state if they can slander a hero of Russia with impunity?" Savin, head of the Kuzbass veterans' organization, added that many soldiers took Shamanov's humiliation as a personal insult: "The authorities are doing nothing. There's no reaction, and all of this is perceived as a slap in the face . " Sergei Zasorin, Deputy Director of the Center for Regional Cooperation at Moscow State Pedagogical University, was forced to agree with the criticism. He called Kadyrov's attacks "a mistake by the top leadership" and acknowledged that the Kremlin should not have allowed the general's "public flogging." Another target was propagandist Solovyov, accused of venality. Veterans were perplexed why a man who "licks where it's profitable" continued to broadcast on a federal television channel.
The Shevchuk situation also received attention. Occupier Kirillov expressed outrage legendary musician performed for free for soldiers during war in Chechnya, now being silenced for his anti-war stance claimed authorities were anyone who dared to speak truth "enemies. "Such open criticism is extremely rare, especially from war veterans, whom Kremlin is accustomed to using as propaganda tools.
Therefore, case is one of the few such precedents. Recall, yet return of Russian soldiers from Ukraine is already straining families and communities, with violent crimes drawing headlines and neighbors on edge. With some 700,000 men still fighting, the country now faces the far larger test of what will happen when they all come home.
“War veterans often find it difficult to integrate back into civilian society even with psychological support and rehabilitation programs,” Dr. Jenny Mathers, senior lecturer in international politics at Aberystwyth University, told The Moscow Times.
“The absence of such support for many Russian war veterans, combined with the emphasis in Russian society on men displaying certain types of masculine behavior — such as toughness, concealing softer emotions such as sorrow or fear — will make it even harder,” said Mathers, whose research focuses on Russia’s war in Ukraine. Cases of returning soldiers committing crimes have been steadily growing.
