Well, I am sure any SGreans, who are bilingually educated, are sensitive folks who aren't easily "riled up" simply of an intentional act that is based on lies.

My Indonesian friend, very daringly said strange that some HKgers don’t speak Mandarin in front of the Cantonese-speaking taxi driver. Born Chinese but don’t speak Mandarin. One side speaks Mandarin while the other insists on speaking Cantonese.

Actually, his Mandarin is learned over the years by mixing around.

Ask you something: did your ancestors  speak Mandarin ? Or did they speak Cantonese/ Hokkien etc ?
If not Mandarin speaking ,  they were not Chinese ?
And you should feel ashamed of them .

IMHO, everyone is entitled to be proud of their heritage...be in culture, belief traditional practices, languages...etc

Why ? Simply because each of us wants to have an identity - aka self respect.

That is exactly the SCMP reporter is alluding to in his article as a very Westernised Chinese Canadian who prefer to called simply "Chinese"...
