Slovakia likely to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine

The Czech Republic’s notorious Kub air defense vehicles are now active on the ground against Russia. Could they use Western missiles?.

Czech Republic’s upgraded Soviet 2K12M2 Kub-M2 air defense vehicles—nicknamed the “Three Fingers of Death”—are now active on the ground in Ukraine, supplementing a small number of Ukrainian Kubs already claimed in service.Back on May 10, Czech president Petr Pavel stated he would transfer two Kub-M2 batteries to Ukraine, implying a total of six to eight launcher vehicles and two SURN 1S91 radar vehicles, as well as a “relatively large number” (ie. hundreds or low thousands) of 3M9 ramjet-powered anti-aircraft missiles. Now it’s clear at least some of those systems arrived.

After 18 months of relentless warfare, Ukraine needs more air defense missiles broadly as it depletes stocks of old Soviet-era missiles fending off a two-front Russian onslaught: constant attacks by cruise missiles and Iranian-origin kamikaze drones hitting civilians in Ukrainian cities, while low-flying attack helicopters and fighter-bombers carry out pop-up attacks on Ukrainian troops on the frontline.

Over 100 countries signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions, banning their use, transfer, production, and stockpiling. Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. are not among the signatories.

Rishi Sunak made a £2.5bn commitment to Ukraine’s defence on Friday during a visit to Kyiv, and pledged UK would not falter at a time when military aid from US has stalled. Sunak met the country’s president, Zelenskiy, embracing him warmly, and addressed Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada.

According to Col. Ants Kiviselg, commander of the Estonian Defense Forces' (EDF) intelligence center, indicates Russia considers l arrival of F-16 fighters in Ukraine's arsenal to be dangerous added that more major Russian missile attacks are expected.

Speaking Col. Kiviselg said  Russia has been actively using long-range bombers and Kalibr missiles in recent weeks to strike at Ukrainian military, defense industry and infrastructure sites.
"All over the country, hits have been made on ports, electricity and railway infrastructure, military airfields, weapons and ammunition depots and military training facilities as well as defense industry enterprises engaged in the production and repair of weapons," Kiviselg said.

"The violation of airfields indicates that Russians consider the arrival of F-16s in Ukraine's arsenal as dangerous," Kiviselg pointed out that one Russia's ongoing tactics has been to try to overstretch Ukraine's air defenses. The EDF colonel said that with a spell of cold weather ahead, more large-scale attacks can be expected from Russia in the near future, as it is currently producing more ammunition than it is using.

EDF colonel: Russian troops have initiative on front line Kiviselg also said that if Russia is firing 10,000 rockets a day at Ukraine, Ukraine is currently responding with around 2,000 rockets a day. He
said main target for Russian forces is the town of Avdiivka. Major battles continue to rage both in and around the town, though the Russians have so far failed to completely encircle it.

ANALYSIS: The Russian Paradox: 57% Want Peace, But 74% Support the War

A series of polls might offer a glimpse into Russia ahead of its March presidential election, but results are somewhat contradictory. Young pro-Kremlin activists attend a rally in front of the British embassy in Moscow on March 18, 2023. Hundreds of pro-Kremlin activists on March 18, 2023 rallied outside the Moscow embassies of several countries to protest the West's backing of Ukraine on the ninth anniversary of Russia's annexation of Crimea.

Various polls on how Russians perceive the war in Ukraine, conducted at the end of 2023, show a schizophrenic Russia that supports the war and peace negotiations simultaneously.

But low enlistment numbers, coupled with the dislike for mobilization, might be an indicator of indifference towards the war – Russians might support the war, but they don’t want to sacrifice themselves for it.

Polls in Russia are notoriously non-representative due to the prevalence of political censorship and there is cause to take any polls coming from there with a grain of salt.

Bearing that in mind, the latest polls might hint at dissatisfaction with the war ahead of the Russian presidential election in March.

Three polls shared a common finding – a huge portion of Russians appear to support the war. Or, at least, Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

Russia-based Levada Center reported that in its November poll, 74 percent of the 1,625 people it interviewed “support the actions of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine,” with a growing number of respondents saying the war’s going smoothly (66 percent in November versus 55 percent in June) for Russia.

The US-based University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center (NORC) found that 63 percent of respondents supported Russia’s invasion in its own November poll.

Maria Vorontsova’s comments will likely raise a few eyebrows given her father has sent hundreds of thousands of men to their deaths in Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
In October, the Chronicles research project found that 52 percent of respondents said they supported it. However, the Russian opposition-initiated project concluded that many respondents likely chose the answers they gave out of fear of government repercussions.

The Chronicles and NORC polls were by phone while the one by Levada Center was in person.

The level of support varies

The different methodologies employed by the polls have produced varying results, but most have demonstrated a decrease in pro-war fanatics inside Russia.

Thirty-nine percent of those interviewed – down from 45 percent in October – said they supported the actions of the Russian military in Levada’s poll without reservations and answered with a “definitely” in their response.

Chronicles placed the number of “consistent” supporters – that is, those who not only support the war, but also believe army expenses should be a priority, and who would oppose withdrawing from Ukraine without reaching Russian President Vladimir Putin’s goals – at only 12 percent of responders, down from 22 percent in February.

And NORC found that just under half, 45 percent, “strongly” support the war.

Only 10 to 15 percent of the population supports “war parties” like that of Igor “Strelkov” Girkin, said Valery Fedorov, the director of Kremlin-loyal pollster WCIOM and an official advisor to the first deputy chairman of Russia’s presidential administration.

A Moscow man wearing a t-shirt bearing a portrait of imprisoned Igor Girkin (Strelkov)

“The majority of Russians do not want to seize Kyiv or Odesa,” he said. “If it was up to them whether to start the special military operation, they probably would not have done it.”

What do Russians think about peace negotiations?

The Levada poll indicated that 57% of Russians “believe that peace negotiations should begin.”
Fifty-seven (%) is a record-high, matching the level October 2022, after Kremlin declared a partial mobilization of military reservists. Of those interviewed, 24% said Russia needed to negotiate peace, while 33& would simply “prefer” negotiations.

Meanwhile, Chronicles reported that 49 percent of its respondents “didn’t express support for the war,” and 40% “would support the decision to withdraw without reaching goals of the war.”

Neither Levada nor Chronicles asked Russians their thoughts on unconditionally withdrawing from Ukraine, including occupied territories.

A schizophrenic Russia

The contradictory results, which simultaneously demonstrated high support for the war and a desire for negotiations, could be interpreted as a sign of indifference – “So long the war does not affect me, who cares?”

This is apparent in Russian presidential candidate Boris Nadezhdin’s comments on the lack of support for military wives.

“Some Russians try to brush these women off. ‘Since the trouble did not affect me personally, it means there is no need to worry. Their husbands are their problem,” he said.

Coupled with the video that showed a pro-war Russian’s reluctance to be forcibly drafted when he was mistaken for an anti-war protestor and detained, and how a number of Russians openly displayed their support for the war while abroad and safe from being mobilized, it’s apparent that a huge percentage of Russians believe in the war, just not in fighting it themselves.

On the other hand, the desire for peace negotiations could also stem from economic hardships caused by the war, where 44 percent of respondents reported a decrease in family income in the Chronicles poll.

The economic hardship was evident through rising food prices, where falling oil prices and the shift of government spending to military manufacturing have driven egg prices in Russia up by over 37 percent in some cities in December.

While the US-based NORC poll did not cover opinions on potential peace talks, it asked those who are opposed to the war why did they so, where 31 percent cited “loss of life, threat to life” as the reason, followed by 18 percent who cited “pacifism, cannot be fought.”

NORC poll respondents seem to have a stronger pro-war stance, with those supporting it citing the fight against the US and NATO as the main reason, followed by a series of claims on purported Ukrainian far-right ideologies and the notion of “brotherly nations” between Russia and Ukraine that aligned with the Kremlin’s narratives used to justify its invasion.

Generational and gender divide

Levada’s poll shows divisions in the Russian population by age and by gender with support for the Ukraine invasion halving for those under the age of 24.

“More often than others, older age groups support the actions of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine (89 percent among respondents 65+) [...] The level of support for the actions of Russian troops is lower among younger age groups (24 percent under the age of 24),” said the report.

The study also shows different views about the Russian state based on gender.

“[National] Pride in Russia is mainly felt by men (47 percent) and older people (52 percent aged 55 and older). Anxiety, fear and horror are experienced more often by women (42 percent) and younger Russians (43 percent under the age of 24),” Levada’s survey finds.

There are corresponding differences based on where people get their information – with those holding more conservative views saying television is their main source.

A younger population increasingly distancing itself from Kremlin propaganda might have a long-term impact on the government's authority.

Moscow vs the rest of Russia

The Levada poll found that Muscovites “are less ready to move on to peace negotiations.” In other regions of Russia, more than half of respondents said they saw a need to begin peace talks, whereas less than half, 43 percent, did in Moscow.

While hundreds of thousands from other regions were drafted and came back in body bags, large cities like Moscow are largely shielded from mobilization and the effects of sanctions.

That said, there is at least some anecdotal evidence that seems somewhat contradictory.

“Indeed, while on the (Moscow) metro, people distance themselves, uttering ‘Ew, murderer,” one Russian soldier said in an interview with the pro-invasion miliary blog WarGonzo. “When I first went to Novosibirsk, I felt relieved because individuals there treated people like us with respect, unlike in Moscow. It's quite saddening,” another said.

Whatever the case may be, despite the Kremlin’s effort to control the information space, there appear to be divisions in Russian society between the capital and poorer regions.

Is Putin worried?

While Putin will win the election, dissent from the population might continue to affect his rule in the coming years.

The NORC poll said 66 percent of respondents claimed they would vote for Putin, but 42 percent agreed with the statement that there should be a regime change in Russia.

Dissatisfaction towards the war and government seemed apparent from a Q&A session with Putin in December 2023, where various sarcastic questions appeared on-screen from Russians about the war.

According to Russian Field polling, 58 percent of Russians oppose another wave of mobilization.

This may have been a calculation in Putin’s year-end speech, in which he only mentioned Russia’s war in Ukraine in passing.

Putin’s election strategy

Putin’s election strategy appears to be appeasing the population while picking someone worse than himself as an alternative to vote against.

While Russia’s elections are known to be unfair and non-transparent, the illusion of a choice exists in the form of Nikolai Kharitonov, a Communist Party candidate, alongside Leonid Slutsky and Vladislav Davankov – two virtual unknowns.

“We can expect more and more payouts,” said Mark Galeotti, an expert on modern Russia, in an interview. “A crucial element of the campaign is always to make the opposition look hopeless and or toxic, so that Putin is elevated by the contrast.”

Galeotti said the election is “entirely theatrical” so as to not trigger public outcry were it not held.

“The best that Putin can hope for is not to lose too much legitimacy, I don’t think he will gain anything from the election,” he said. “And the elections do provide a little space for debate and discussion – and that will be a problem for the regime. People will want to discuss aspects of the war – like the veterans not getting the benefits they were promised.”

But the election – and his presumed victory – is unlikely to grow his support, and Russians will begin to ask more questions as many of them have seen their quality of life go down, Galeotti said.

For so long, Putin’s rhetoric has been ‘you stay out of politics, and your quality of life will improve bit by bit, year by year, and your children will live a better life than you.’ Now that deal has been broken, there is more a sense of long-term pessimism,” he said. “He’s trying to shift [the narrative to] ‘we are a beleaguered fortress, in this together,’ which doesn’t have much traction with ordinary Russians.”..... The article states that the delivery schedule has always depended on the fulfilment of several conditions, including the successful training of Ukrainian pilots and the availability of sufficient logistics and infrastructure for servicing the F-16s in Ukraine, as stated by the ministry without providing more detailed information.

Berlingske reported that, currently, six Ukrainian pilots are undergoing training on these fighters in Denmark. In August, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen promised to send 19 F-16 aircraft to Kyiv.

Background:
On 5 January, it was reported that Norway had completed the delivery to Denmark of two F-16 fighter jets intended for training Ukrainian pilots.

Norway announced this week that it would send two F-16 fighter jets to Denmark to train Ukrainian pilots in their use and confirmed that it would send 10 instructors to Denmark to help with the training.
Belgium will also send two two-seat F-16 fighter jets and about fifty personnel to Denmark between March and September to train Ukrainian pilots.

Ukrainian pilots are or will be trained in the USA, Romania, Denmark, France and the UK. Last year, six Ukrainians completed basic training, including learning English, before Christmas.

Their asylum claims are resolved or construction of 900 miles of a border wall. “That’s a non-starter for me, and I think for most of us,” said Congressman Juan Vargas. Other Democratic Congressmen accused Johnson and other Republicans of deliberately inserting poison pill provisions such as the border wall construction to intentionally doom the bill and then blame Democrats for its failure to pass.

"The Republicans are throwing Ukrainians to the dogs,” Vargas said. “It’s sad; I think it’s a horrible situation, but that’s what I think they’re doing.”

Johnson, who has previously voiced support for funding Ukraine, also faces pressure from the far-right wing of his party. Some Republicans in Congress and Senate have already gone further.
Some of the most outspoken Republican opponents of U.S. aid for Ukraine, such as Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, have categorically said they will not vote for any future funding, whether or not it also contains the border restrictions.

Ukrainian Crews Set A Complex Missile Trap For Russia’s Best Radar Plane....“Who did this?” Sat night....the Ukrainian air force quipped. The answer, it seems, is the air arm’s 90-mile-range Patriot PAC-2 air-defense missiles. Less likely: shorter-range Patriot PAC-3s or S-300s. Exactly how Ukrainians shot down the four-engine A-50 with its top-mounted radar is unclear, but analyst Tom Cooper—who has written many books about Soviet and Russian warplanes—has a theory....?.?.?.

This is for Putin to miscalculatvled! is not only a self-inflicted, it also to kill and also thus this time killing his own.... Tongue  Tongue (part 1)

If Cooper’s theory is correct, Ukrainians set trap on Saturday, Ukrainian air force jets—presumably Sukhoi Su-24 bombers—struck Russian air force installations across Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula. “A number of radars were knocked out,” Cooper says. Then Saturday strikes is latest in a long campaign of raids on Russian defenses on Crimea, suppressed Russians’ ground-based radar coverage, leaving surviving missile batteries on peninsula partially blind—especially north, where terrain could mask incoming Ukrainian planes, drones & missiles. So Russian commanders did the obvious, (but a very stupid, thing). So ordered one of their few remaining A-50U radar planes, which normally fly far to the south over the Sea of Azov, to push farther north in order to extend radar coverage over most of Crimea. An A-50’s rotating radar can see airplane-size targets nearly 200 miles away.

A four-prop Ilyushin Il-22M airborne command post with around 10 crew aboard accompanied the A-50. The Il-22 is a radio-relay platform; its crew assists the A-50’s crew by handling communications and data-transfer for which the A-50 lacks the power and processing.

Satellite imagery and radar data seem to place the A-50’s northernmost flight path over occupied Berdyansk, just 75 miles from the front line. That’s within range of the single Patriot surface-to-air missile battery, out of three in the arsenal, that the Ukrainian air force has deployed along the southern front.

The trick was for the Ukrainians to target the A-50 and its accompanying Il-22 without giving the Russian crews too much advance notice of the attack—and without sacrificing their precious Patriot system.

“All Ukrainians had to do was to secretly deploy a suitable SAM system to target the two aircraft from long range,” Cooper wrote. “Perhaps this was one of [air force’s] S-300 SAM systems. Perhaps one of [the air force’s] PAC-2/3 SAM systems.”

(Part 2) story....Ukrainian Crews Set A Complex Missile Trap For Russia’s Best Radar Plane....“Who did this?”... Tongue

This is for Putin to miscalculatvled! is not only a self-inflicted, it also to kill and also thus this time killing his own aitforce.... Tongue  Tongue

“It is also possible that Ukrainians have deployed a launcher a radar, plus power-supply equipment, from one of their three PAC-2/3 SAM systems in combination with one of their S-300 radars.”There’s some evidence of an S-300-Patriot team-up. A Russian air force Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber reportedly detected a previously unknown Ukrainian S-300 battery switching on its radar in the minutes before A-50 & Il-22 were hit. If S-300 battery did the initial illumination, it must have passes along target tracks to a nearby hidden Patriot battery. “The latter powered up its radar for only a few seconds: long enough to obtain its own targeting data, but too short for the Russians to dependably detect its emissions and assess them as a threat,” Cooper surmised. So...

“And then the Ukrainians started firing their missiles.”.. Laughing  Sleepy

A minute later, the missiles Bomb exploded—destroying the A-50 and damaging the Il-22. “With their fire-action over,”

Cooper wrote, “Ukrainian S-300 and PAC-2/3 crews promptly ceased emitting, and started packing [up] their systems to move them away and thus avoid any possible Russian retaliation.” Rotfl

Down one A-50, Russian air force may have just two of the jets left; the other six A-50s reportedly are in need of upgrade and overhaul. Unless the air force is willing to risk the last two flyable A-50s, it must make peace with its new inability to provide radar coverage over all of Crimea.

It must, in other words, accept the risk of continuing—indeed, escalating—Ukrainian missile raids on Russian forces on the peninsula.
If there’s any comfort for the Russians, it might be that the Ukrainian air force does not have a limitless supply of PAC-2 missiles.

Unless and until pro-Russia Republicans in the U.S. Congress approve $61 billion in fresh aid to Ukraine. U.S. president Joe Biden has proposed to the Ukrainians may need to begin rationing their missiles—and taking fewer chances on ambitious missile traps...(continuing Part 2)

Russia got components worth £2.3bn from West despite sanctions, Kyiv saysWestern companies supplied Russia with critical components worth $2.9 bn (£2.3bn) in the first 10 months of 2023, despite sanctions on Moscow, Ukrainian president’s office has said.

“The products of more than 250 Western companies were found in samples of destroyed or captured Russian weapons,” the office said, citing research by a working group run by the president’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak and by Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Russia.

The research focused on Russia’s attempts to circumvent export control sanctions on military goods, the president’s office said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called for patience among Ukraine’s key Western backers, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

His comments at World Economic Forum in Davos came just hours after Russian drone and missile attacks overnight wounded at least 20 people across Ukraine and shelling killed two civilians. The barrage left massive craters in the southern city of Odesa where AFP journalists saw residential buildings charred in the wake of the assault. This is Ukraine blue skies as Russia’s assault enters third year.

His comments at the World Economic Forum in Davos came just hours as barrage left massive craters in the southern city of Odesa where AFP journalists saw residential buildings charred in the wake of the assault. As rescue workers hauled out vulnerable residents on stretchers from housing blocks had had their windows blown out in the Black Sea city, footage from emergency services showed.

“In 2024, of course the priority is to throw Russia from the skies,” Mr Kuleba said, in an address to the World Economic Forum in Davos. “Because the one who controls the skies will define when and how the war will end,” he added. Kyiv has long pressured the West to deliver advanced fighter jets to support its troops entrenched in the south and east of the country.

Responding to those calls, President Emmanuel Macron announced this week that France would deliver a new batch of around 40 Scalp long-range cruise missiles, as well as hundreds of bombs, as Kyiv fights the Russian invasion.

But even that pledge is limited compared to the range of munitions that Russian forces have recently been raining down across Ukraine.

Bit by bit, year by year, and your ot their children will live a better life than you.’ Now deal has been broken, there is more a sense of long-term pessimism....

Russia Enlists 30,000 Soldiers Monthly for Ukraine Conflict....(to replace those missing, kill and those)

Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy chief major general of Ukraine's main military intelligence arm, has recently reported that Russia is enlisting approximately 30,000 soldiers monthly. Although this recruitment of soldiers each month suffices to compensate for frontline losses, Russia would have to initiate a larger-scale mobilization to build a more substantial strategic reserve.

This rate of recruitment, which averages 1,000 to 1,100 people per day, is in response to the significant casualties Russia has sustained in ongoing Ukraine conflict. This info is in line with the observations made by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which corroborates the scale of Russia's efforts to maintain operational rotations in Ukraine. Targeting by year 2025, to hitt 500k Casualty.

Skibitskyi's statements shed light on the high-casualty approach of the Russian military, particularly in strategic urban battles such as those in Bakhmut and Avdiivka. Analysts have observed the continuation of these tactics across various fronts, notably the United States' report in October about Russia employing "human wave" tactics. These involve deploying underprepared and poorly equipped troops into high-intensity combat scenarios, often resulting in significant losses.
