Ukraine Reportedly Tests New Jet-Powered Kamikaze Drone. Ukrainian drone have surfaced on the internet, and the existence of an air intake suggested that the drone was powered by a jet engine.

A new drone was tested in Ukraine, with photos and videos indicative of an air intake that pointed towards the use of a jet engine announcement was made on the Facebook page of Maxim Glushak, according to military news outlet Militarnyi.

Photos, the drone sported a canard design with smaller wings placed at the front of the vehicle, which could generate more lift and provide longitudinal stability. Meanwhile, the back of drone resembles that of a jet propulsion engine, with Militarnyi, a military news outlet, suggesting the thrust to be adjustable.

In the test footage, the drone could be seen taking off with the aid of a special cart, which detached once the drone reached a certain speed. The sound generated by the drone is also reminiscent of ordinary jet planes.

According to Militarnyi, volunteers from the “Battalion Volunteer” charitable foundation also took part in the drone’s test flight.

The defense ministry said Thursday that air defense systems shot down drones over the regions of Moscow and St. Petersburg, with one official claiming Ukraine targeted a Russian oil terminal in Leningrad, the northwestern Russian region where St. Petersburg is located. The port infrastructure was not damaged and no one was injured, the official said.

Kyiv has not publicly commented on the claims. If accurate, however, it would mark the first time that the northern region of Leningrad, where St. Petersburg is, has been targeted by Ukraine.

The governor of the border Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said a woman was injured and several houses and electricity and gas supply lines were damaged during a Ukrainian attack on the village of Myasoedovo near Belgorod.

It’s clear the Ukrainian military understands the importance of the electromagnetic fight. But it’s less clear the US military understands it. Electronic warfare, or EW, is invisible. It’s the practice of tapping, blocking and hijacking the enemy’s radars and radios – while preventing the enemy from tapping, blocking and hijacking your own radars and radios.

It’s high-tech work, involving sensitive electronic receivers and powerful transmitters. It’s all about frequencies and wattage, time, space & coordination. After all, if you’re not careful, all back to radio noise that might jam enemy’s communications might also block your communications, (is all back to radio). EW is expensive, unglamorous & requires a lot of training. So it should come as no surprise that many militaries neglect it. Not so Russian military. The Russians or the Soviets before them, had reputation for fearsome electronic attack and defense that reputation wasn’t unearned. July 2014, during early mths of Russia’s initial invasion on eastern Ukraine, 3-Ukrainie brigades learned hard way that Russian regiments always fight for the electromagnetic spectrum.

The Ukrainians had massed their tanks & infantry in Zelenopillya, just few miles from Russian border, in preparation for attack on rebel-held Luhansk. But Russian drones located the encampment & Russian forces jammed the Ukrainian headquarters’ radios.
“The form, prostrate & unable to communicate, were then ruthlessly attacked by Russian multiple-launch rockets and run-of-the-mill tube artillery,” US Army

Major Amos Fox noted in a 2019 edition of Armor, a military trade journal.

Range of Kh-59MK air-to-surface missile, which is used by russian terrorists to attack Ukraine, turned out to be less than what was officially declared by the manufacturer, and russia’s "defense" minister Shoigu demands that the range of these missiles should be increased. The war criminal, who is the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, visited the russian developer and manufacturer of long-range missiles MKB Raduga, which is part of JSC Tactical Missiles Corporation (major russian holding company for the manufacturers of military weapons, especially missiles). This enterprise manufactures or maintains the technical condition of Kh-22, Kh- 32, X-59, X-555, X-101 cruise missiles and others.

In the video released as a result of the visit, Serhiy Shoigu expressed dissatisfaction with the weapons available in the russian federation. In particular, being next to the Kh-59MK missile, he complained, saying that it was necessary to increase its range, which in practice is 250 km, although the official declared range was 285 km.

During 1.5 years of war, russia brought back into service a minimum of 80 2S7 Pion self-propelled howitzers, excluding barrels. This raises question of whether Russians have the resources to planned heavy artillery brigades

Satellite images available to the public indicate from February 2022 to July 2023, self-propelled artillery systems, specifically 2S7 Pion, were essentially removed from storage depots at 94th Arsenal of Missile Artillery Weapons of russian Army in Omsk.

The "remnants" identifiable in the images are likely the hulls of the self-propelled artillery units from which the barrels were removed.

These losses or damages by fire from Ukrainian Armed Forces, barrel ruptures, or need to replace other components. Additionally deployment of new artillery units within the composition of the occupying russian forces could be a contributing factor.

It is also possible to assume that these self-propelled artillery systems could have been stored not only at the 94th arsenal in Omsk, if assumptions are correct, then in fact, the russian army may have in reserve significantly fewer than 260 units of the 2S7 Pion systems (as indicated, for example, in The Military Balance 2023 handbook).

Accordingly, if the actual number of these large-caliber self-propelled artillery units in storage is less than stated, then the question arises as to whether the russian army really has the resources to create "full-fledged" 5 heavy artillery brigades, the plan for which the russians reiterated at the end of 2023.

EU Has Steps Up to Supply Ukraine with Ammunition
January 20, 2024 5:30

The European Union said will to been ramping up up to 1.3 million, its production of ammunition in response to Ukrainian calls for support as its war against Russia closes in on the two-year mark. By end of the year, EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said, EU will be able to produce at least 1.3 million rounds of ammunition.

"We are at a crucial moment for our collective security in Europe, as Putin war of aggression run by Russia in Ukraine, Europe must and will continue to support Ukraine with all its means,"

Breton told reporters during a visit to Estonia. The announcement comes as NATO prepares for military exercises begin next week, amid concerns that war in Ukraine could tumble over into other European countries. "We hear threats from Kremlin almost every day — most recently again against our friends in the Baltic states," German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Friday in the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

Next NATO will mount its largest series of military exercises since the end of the Cold War. The Steadfast Defender 2024 will involve about 90,000 troops from all 31 NATO members and Sweden in the war games rehearsal that runs through May.

"We have to realize it’s not a given that we are in peace," said Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, the NATO military committee chief, earlier this week in Brussels  meeting of military chiefs. "Expect the unexpected."

Elsewhere Friday, International Atomic Energy Agency said that Russia has surrounded the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant with landmines.

New £2.5bn military aid package from UK has been welcomed here, with £200m of that earmarked specifically for drones. But President Zelensky has also pledged to make a million of them within the borders of Ukraine.

Technologies now aday, is arms race: who will be the first to invent what, who will assemble something cool," the drone commander says. It's widely accepted several innovations now need to happen at once for the front lines to change significantly.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyy told the Economist magazine in November that Russia and Ukraine had "reached the level of technology that puts us into a stalemate". The problem for Ukraine has never been what has been supplied by allies, but when.

"During First World War, aviation was born," says Stitch. "Now we r starting future war of drones, which maybe in two decades will turn the tide of any war."

For the first time, Ukrainian leader Zelensky has expressed publicly unequivocal concern over Donald Trump’s suggestion he could end the Russia-Ukraine war within a day if he returns to the White House.

Speaking to Britain’s Channel Four News in an interview that aired Friday, Ukrainian president described Republican frontrunner’s boast as “very dangerous” – on the grounds that Trump has not said what his post-war scenario would look like. Zelensky conceded it was possible Trump’s claim was just electioneering, the idea that Trump as president might unilaterally make decisions that do not work for Ukraine or its people, and seek to drive them through regardless, “makes me really quite stressed.”

Trump’s propensity make sweeping pronouncements on foreign policy resurfaced in May last year, when he told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, “If I’m president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours.” Asked how, Trump said he would meet both Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, telling Collins, “They both have weaknesses and they both have strengths and within 24 hours that war will be settled, that war will be over.”

Zelensky has generally stayed away from criticizing Trump, preferring not to lean-in too heavily to the split between Democrats and Trump-supporting Republicans, who have effectively put a block on further US funding for Kyiv.

Zelensky signs decree recognizing some Russian territories as historically inhabited by Ukrainians

Zelensky signs decree recognizing some Russian territories as historically inhabited by Ukrainians. President Volodymyr Zelensky gives his Unity Day address on Jan. 22, 2024. (President of Ukraine)

Ukraine will take steps to research, publicize, and protect the histories of Ukrainians living in parts of modern-day Russia that have been historically inhabited by Ukrainians, according to a decree signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Jan. 22.

Zelensky announced he had signed the decree during his address on Unity Day, a national holiday celebrated on Jan. 22 that marks the unification of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic in 1919 into one independent country.

The decree "On the Territories of the Russian Federation Historically Inhabited by Ukrainians" stipulates that the government should cooperate with international experts to create a plan "to preserve the national identity of Ukrainians" in specific territories of what is now Russia.

The decree listed the regions of Kuban, a historical region to the east of the Crimean Peninsula, Starodubshchyna, to the north of Chernihiv, and northern and eastern Slobozhanshchyna.

Also known as Sloboda Ukraine, Slobozhanshchyna was a significant and semi-autonomous region under Tsarist rule that extended across what is now northeastern Ukraine, predominantly Sumy, Kharkiv, and Luhansk oblasts, and southwestern Russia.

Krasnodar Krai covers most of what was once Kuban, while Starodubshchyna now lies predominantly in Bryansk Oblast.

The decree also declares that the government should preserve the history of Ukrainians in these regions. Their testimonies on the forced Russification, political repression, and deportations they suffered should be recorded, according to the decree.

More work should also be done to counter "disinformation and propaganda of the Russian Federation regarding the history and present of Ukrainians in Russia" and to develop relations between Ukrainians and other "peoples enslaved by Russia," the decree says.

The govt should work with the National Academy of Sciences to develop materials about the "more than a thousand-year history of Ukrainian state formation, the historical connections of lands inhabited by ethnic Ukrainians, and Ukrainian national state formations in various historical periods."

The "true history of ethnic Ukrainians in the lands historically inhabited by them within the borders of the Russian Federation" should also be included in educational textbooks, according to the decree.

Russia says Kyiv downed POW plane, no survivors.
Russia on Wednesday (Jan 24) accused Ukraine of shooting down a military transport plane carrying dozens of Ukrainian prisoners headed for a prisoner exchange, killing everyone on board.

Kyiv confirmed a prisoner swap was due to occur Wednesday, but several hours after the crash said it still had no reliable information on the passengers, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for an international investigation.

Videos on social media showed a large plane in Russia's western Belgorod region falling from the sky on its side before crashing in a fireball. Russia's defence ministry said the IL-76 plane was carrying 65 Ukrainian soldiers captured in Russia's offensive, six crew and three escorts.

It claimed Ukrainian forces stationed in the Kharkiv border region had fired two missiles at the transport aircraft and described the incident as a "terrorist act".

"We currently do not have reliable or comprehensive information on who was on board the plane or in what number," Ukraine's main intelligence agency said in a statement.

NEWS FEED-- Zelensky on Il-76 crash: Ukraine to demand international investigation.. A Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft on the tarmac.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address on Jan. 24 that Ukraine will insist on an international investigation into the crash of the Russian Il-76 transport plane in Belgorod Oblast.

A Russian Il-72 military transport plane crashed in Belgorod Oblast the morning of Jan. 24, killing all aboard. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that 65 Ukrainian POWs were on the plane en route to a prisoner exchange when it crashed.

Commenting on Russia's claims, Zelensky said that Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) “was clarifying the fate of the POWs.” He did not confirm whether they were on the plane. “It is obvious that the Russians are playing with the lives of Ukrainian prisoners, with the feelings of their relatives and with the emotions of our society,” the president said.

Zelensky said he spoke with Ukraine's military leadership, including Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi and Chief of the General Staff Serhii Shaptala, regarding the crash. He said the Security Service of Ukraine is investigating all the circumstances of the plane's crash, which the Russian Defense Ministry first reported. He further instructed Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to inform international partners about the data available to Ukraine as the investigation proceeds.

"We need to establish all the clear facts. As much as possible, given that the plane went down on Russian territory — beyond our control. 'Facts' is the key word now," Zelensky said. The General Staff said in a statement earlier on Jan. 24 that the Ukrainian military would continue to destroy the missile delivery vehicles Russia uses to shell Kharkiv Oblast, which borders Belgorod Oblast, without mentioning the crash of the Il-76.

Ukrainska Pravda reported that the plane was carrying S-300 missiles, citing its sources in the Ukrainian military.

U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said White House couldn’t confirm claims that Ukrainian POWs were in the plane that crashed in Belgorod Oblast. Ukraine says it was not informed about need to ensure safety of airspace before plane crash in Belgorod Oblast.

Almost 14,000 folks used route to enter the euro in 2023, a near-fivefold rise over the previous year. The sudden increase has revealed a significant gap in the regulation of Kaliningrad transit & raises questions about security & effectiveness of sanctions against Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Russian passengers traveling across Lithuania to Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic coast, are able to disembark in the village of Kena and travel from there to the rest of the EU. While many have papers that would allow travel to Lithuania by other routes, the threat of Russian agents or military personnel using the railroad as a backdoor to the West should not be underestimated.

Inaction over misuse threatens to undermine attempts to strengthen Lithuania’s security, & may even put Lithuania and NATO in position where they will have to respond to a hybrid attack. Kaliningrad transit route attracted global attention in June 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, when Lithuania banned rail transport of sanctioned goods to & from Russian exclave through its territory.

Month later, a fierce reaction from Kremlin, the EU updated its guidance that only transit of sanctioned cargoes by road was prohibited. Lithuania lifted the blanket ban & goods — except military & dual-use products, continued rolling through Lithuania by rail.
This was, however, only half the story. In 2002, EU & Russia had agreed to allow free passage fm mainland Russia to Kaliningrad through Lithuania for “persons” as well as goods, “with aim of further developing the strategic partnership between EU & Russia,” people part of this equation has now become a problem.

Concern over passenger transit by rail mounted after serious breaches of the scheme were revealed. As a result of the 2002 agreement, holders of the Facilitated Rail Travel Document are permitted to travel on a single route across Lithuanian territory: Kena–Vilnius–Kaunas–Kybartai. Disembarking from trains in Lithuania was not part of the plan.

Ukrainian officials meet relatives of POWs who Russia claims were in crashed Il-76, say no evidence to confirm that. Ukraine’s Coordination HQ for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said on Jan. 26 that during the planned exchange of POWs two days earlier Moscow was to return to Ukraine 65 people from one of the lists Russian propagandists shared after the crash of Il-76 transport plane in Russia's Belgorod Oblast.

The confirmation came after Russian propagandist Margarita Simonyan published a list of Ukrainian POWs who were allegedly on board the aircraft on Jan. 24. The headquarters did not specify whether this was the mentioned list.

According to the Headquarters Secretary, Dmytro Usov, after Ukraine’s repeated requests to share the list of POWs Russia claims were on the plane, Moscow responded, referring to one of the lists previously published on Russian propaganda sources.

Athens, Greece, January 28, 2024

In a significant development amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Greek govt has announced its decision to supply Ukraine with used dated weapons systems that are no longer in active service with the Greek armed forces.

This move aligns with Greece's broader strategy of modernizing its military capabilities while on going,  supporting Ukraine in its defense efforts against Russia / Putin's, to protect their sovereignty against invaders and aggressors
