Of course faith is first. If you don't believe in God and the hereafter, discussing salvation is moot.

Did Jesus say obedience to the Law is critical for salvation? Yes, clearly, with no ambiguity. 

So, how come you believe the Law is optional? Because of Paul's teachings.

Paul's teachings focus on salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice, rather than strict adherence to the Law... because we can't perfect the law completely
