In ancient Israelite practice, people would offer various animals as burnt offerings to God, known as Jehovah. These included bulls, rams, goats, and even birds like turtledoves and pigeons. The animals were to be "clean" and without blemish, and were entirely consumed by fire on the altar as a sweet-smelling aroma to God.
