Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022 with thousands of tanks, but more than 11,000 have been destroyed since. By September 2023, reports estimated Ukraine had captured 500 Russian tanks, bolstering its armor supply by over 50% compared to its pre-war strength of 800–900.

The Da Vinci unit spearheaded this strategy, forming the 1st Assault Regiment from captured tanks after its first haul in spring 2022. By late 2024, these tanks were defending Pokrovsk against Russia’s summer offensive of 110,000 troops. Ukraine has turned Russia’s weapons against their own soldiers, reshaping the battlefield one captured tank at a time.
