Singapore and US reaffirm defence ties

It actually started from Obama by TPP to isolate China , followed by Trump’s Trade War and now Biden by creating conflict between Russia and EU.
Luckily they dare not pick China and ROC.
What are the reasons, any guess?

Globalisation has no longer benefited US.  Rotfl
Currently, China will do whatever they can to stop US plan. So far, China is still doing a good job by remaining as neutral party and did not fall into the trap.

Yea, this is yet another area where US has no advantage and is yet forced to compete with China one on one. The reason why US championed globalization was that it was essentially a maximum return plus divide and conquer strategy.

1) Economically globalization meant US companies could focus on the best margin areas of business and its corporations made easy money. Similarly, by outsourcing to different tiers of countries below them allows the US consumers to enjoy goods cheap with minimal inflation.

2) Another seldom mentioned but equally important aspect of globalization is that it's actually a divide and conquer strategy. Building up a global economic structure in a highly niche way whereby every country plays a narrow and specific part in the global supply chain ensures that no single country can overturn this order as they need the cooperation of both upstream and downstream countries in order to survive.

In a nutshell, globalization enables US to extract maximum economic benefits while maintaining a tight grip on all other countries as they exist as silos and cannot challenge this economic order with US at the top. So what has changed?

China.

China pretty much replicated the entire global supply chain network to a large extent within its domestic economy. It might not be the best in every niche and industry compared to other countries, but it is the only country that is able to compete across the entire economic spectrum from high end to low end. The synergies of having almost an entire value added chain within one country ended up becoming a supra-advantage that no other country can match even if in small and limited areas they do better.

To combine with its integrated supply ecology, the burgeoning middle class created a mega consumer market demand for finished goods comparable to that of the US. What this means is capital across the world continues to pour in either to produce goods/services in China or to sell goods/services to China. Lower tech countries that sell stuff like commodities, energy, agricultural products etc. need to sell ever larger quantities to feed the global factory, mid-high tier countries like precision engineering, tech manufacturing etc. need to sell their expertise to enhance the global factory, high end services providers like banking, consumer brands etc. need to sell to Chinese consumers to maintain growth.

That is precisely why US cannot find a single real ally to take on China despite having a large bunch of them on paper. They have inadvertently all become economic satellites of China whether willingly or reluctantly. The trade war started by Trump and continued by Biden which has now more less ended without much ado is further proof of this.

The US realizes the gains it can derive from globalization has been eroded significantly and it is only a matter of time before the entire setup becomes net detrimental to its national interest. That is why they are now trying to bring back manufacturing, blockade technology, subsidizing national champion companies and whacking friend and foe alike with trade barriers even if it means sacrificing whatever goodwill and reputation it has built up over the decades.

The US is economically under siege. Priority #1 is to defend the castle, they have neither ability nor willingness to care about any so called allies already. The allies know this, so they all pay lip service of solidarity to use as a leverage to negotiate for better terms with China.
