There are S'poreans like my parents who bought freehold landed property in the 1960s which has been fully paid up and have a second property giving them rental yield. They accept a token allowance from their adult children and spend only a little on essential items every month. They are debt free and receiving excellent healthcare in SG.  They mostly eat out before the lunch or dinner crowd emerges and stay home in their comfortable and spacious houses, instead of being cooped up in pigeon holes high up in the sky. Life is peaceful here for such retirees.
