1st public identification of N.Korea’s reliance on west technology for its missile program underscore persistent problem for Biden administration as it tries to keep cheap, Western-made microelectronics intended for civilian use from winding up into weapons used by N.Korea, Iran and Russia.
UK-based investigative organization Conflict Armament Research, or CAR, directly examined 290 components from remnants of a N.Korean ballistic missile in Jan fm Kharkiv found 75% of components were designed, sold by companies incorporated in US, according shared msg fm CNN. Along with extensive sanctions and export controls aimed at curbing access to Western-made technology, in late 2022 Biden administration also set up an expansive task force to investigate how US and Western components, including U.S.-made microelectronics ending up in Iranian-made drones Russia has launch by hundreds into Ukraine.
Circumventing 20 years of sanction, latest CAR report does not name specific companies produced the components, b'cos there's no evidence the firms deliberately shipped parts to N.Korea — instead, the components were well diverted somewhere in the vast global supply chain once the companies sold them to various international distributors.
