Can women become imams? Generally, women can lead female-only congregations. For the majority of Muslim societies, a female imam cannot lead a mixed congregation of men and women, partly due to the reason that women are to pray behind men so that their form is not looked upon when they bow down and prostrate.

I suspect cannot because while in Indonesia I noticed women were not allowed to go mosques for prayers except during the month of Ramadan. Needs Ali to verify.
