U.S. ammunition Has Reached Ukrainian Brigades—And Now Those Brigades Are Blasting Russian Assault Groups. Russian attack on Chasiv Yar has ground to a halt
May 18, 2024,
The 41st Mechanized Brigade artillery early April, Ukrainian forces were in crisis. As U.S. hadn’t approved $61 bil funding for Ukrainian war effort. Likewise, an urgent mobilization law—meant to raise tens of thousands of new troops for the Ukrainian armed forces—had stalled in Kyiv.
Understaffed starved of ammunition they used Ukrainian brigades were at their weakest. And the Kremlin knew where to attack several points along the 600-mile front line Russia’s 27-mths war.
But. A month later, U.S.A. aid to Ukraine is flowing again. But mobilization law is in effect, fresh. So Ukrainian troops are undergoing training and new brigades are forming. Ukraine’s fortunes are improving. Nowhere more less evident Chasiv Yar, town in Donetsk eastern. Ukraine main objective to stop Russian offensive there.
In early days. Russian attack, armored units were steadily advancing north & south of Chasiv Yar while infantry probed town’s most vulnerable district—canal district, lies exposed far side of canal that threads north to south along eastern edge of Chasiv Yar. The Ukrainian defenses in Chasiv Yar were thin getting thinner. mid-April. Ministry in Kyiv dissolved Ukrainian army brigade defending canal district, 67th Mechanized Brigade, after an official investigation confirn allegations of deep incompetence in brigade’s command staff.
Elements of Ukrainian army’s 56th & 41st Mechanized Brigades & 5th Assault Brigade scrambled to fill those gap in defensive line left by dissolution of 67th Mechanized Brigade. Kyiv rushed more drones to Chasiv Yar, meantime, Russian Su-25 attack jets roamed directly over front line, firing rockets@Ukrainian troops who had run out of air-defense missiles, with paratroopers advanced north & south of Chasiv Yar, threatening to surround town’s garrison.
The race was on—between Russian forces trying to capture Chasiv Yar & Ukrainian and allied logisticians rushing U.S. supplied ammunition to the embattled town. The good news forward to friends of a free Ukraine, is that the Ukrainians seem to have won the race. The garrison in Chasiv Yar is now flush with ammo, apparently—and wreaking havoc on Russian assault groups.
On Friday, a battalion of about 20 Russian armored vehicles emerged from Donetsk, they rolled toward Chasiv Yar. As recently as a few weeks ago, Russian assault grp might’ve traveled much of the 3-mile distance from Donetsk to Chasiv Yar relatively unmolested by Ukrainian attacks. With precious few anti-tank missiles & artillery shells, Ukrainians relied on first-person-view drones to bombard those Russian. But those two-pound drones range just 2-miles or so, pack just a pound of explosives—too little to pierce the layers of do-it-yourself armor the Russians have been adding to their vehicles. By mid-May, the Ukrainians were much better-armed. So when Russian assault grp tried to cross miles of open fields, it got hit all the whole way—with 100-pound shells, 50-pound missiles and two-pound drones. Few Russians reached the canal district didn’t last long.
