Malaysian Southeast Asian Games multiple gold medallist in ice-skating Anja Chong, who is also a Singapore permanent resident, has said an Instagram story that “racism in Singapore towards non-Chinese is so rampant and explicit.”

In a story which was loaded on 3 October, the 27-year-old tagged Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong and social justice warriors Wake Up, Singapore (WUSG).

Chong, whose mother Sonja Chong is the Honorary Life President of the Singapore Ice Skating Association, said in her story that she had been trying to look for apartments with her partner, who is an Indian and that the “response has been shocking”.

Her partner is a Malaysian citizen.

She added that she and her partner had been rejected because of the landlord’s “preferences” and because they were “unsuitable tenants”.

She did not black out the name of the agent she was dealing with in her Insta story, who appears to be from property realtors Propnex.

After an exchange with the admin of WUSG which reposted her story, she added another story and said that she will report all property agents who discriminate to the Council for Estate Agencies (CEA).

CEA is the government agency which regulates the real estate agency industry.

WUSG also put up a supporting post after the exchange with Chong, reminding people who have experienced racist practices while looking for home to submit a complaint to CEA.

Do we need a PR to stir?

I blame the agent. Not professional!

A Malaysian coming here to complain about racism? I'll salute her if she complain about it back home!

If I have a property, I will not rent it to her! Not because of race, she is not going to be a pleasant tenant!

Can only blame the property agent, not the Landlord. I am certain the Landlord wouldn't communicate this way.

Singapore property agents are so poor. What do property agents offer to buyer and sellers apart from just setting appointments? Yet they pick up 1% or 1 month rental/sale.

the landlord must be a Angmoh lover,  he/she deserves it. Andy Lau rented out his house to Angmoh in Canada, later Angmoh burnt his house and ran away without paying rental.

Strictly speaking racism, as stereotyping based on race

Practically not racism as it's to protect self/asset more like learning from past experience and choosing to be safe...

Indians cook curry every meal causing curry smell in the house. Chinese cook and deep fry frequently causing range hood very oily. Angmoh like to have parties and get drunk every Friday night and weekend, God knows what they will do after they are pissed, vomit here vomit there.

When it comes to renting out homes ...landlord share experience and then from those experiences profile the type of tenants they want.

Race, country of origin, job etc are used to profile.

For example  some landlord may not want to rent to group of construction workers because they may dirty the house from construction site and so on.

But all these are judgements made to protect one's own assets

The use of race, profession, country of origin, age group is just used in an assessment in which goal is to protect properly. Because race is used landlord is called racist...but I am sure profession, country or origin etc is also used.

I think the term "racism" and racist is now used too liberally. ...there is an angry hateful tone often attached to it.

In Sydney when Asians look for a place to rent, after inspection Asians are always put at last in the list, landlords prefer white Aussies. This is definitely racism.

WTF!

You mean to say EIP....race based quotas imposed by govt.

Is govt setting good example using race as a criteria....but ordinary landlord cannot?

Yes...
It is not a race issue.
But rather a business choice.
Willing buyer and willing seller..

Can Malaysian landlord be force to rent their property for a particular race or nationality..? Lol..

This PR should be revoked imo

HDB is not a private property..
But a government subsidies flat...
Price is approximately half of condo...

If you not happy with hdb EIP, can always buy private Condo. No EIP for new launches  Smile

Nobody forced you to buy HDB in the first place. Why complain?

Who the owner wants to rent to is up to his prerogative and not a racist issue. This Malaysian woman is trying to stir up racial issue here. May be we can look in FICA bill and see if this is a foreign interference case.... Thinking

Thinking is difficult, that's why most people judge

Actually, from the messages, the landlord has a preference for angmo/JP/KR expats. Such expats are perceived to be higher paid and more "creditworthy". Didn't specifically discriminate her and her partner based on race. Some landlords don't want PRC tenants too, not because they are Chinese.
