Russia-Ukraine War on the 2nd Froni.
Antony Blinken and David Lammy’s joint trip to Kyiv, to be followed by Keir Starmer’s trip to Washington DC to see Joe Biden on Friday, has inevitably lifted expectations Ukraine will shortly be given permission to fire Anglo-French Storm Shadow and US Atacms missiles, with a range of 190 miles plus, into Russia. There are no shortage of risks to Ukraine to fire western-made weapons deep into Russia could have a dramatic political impact course of a war mired in a grim, attritional slog appears to be favouring Moscow, whose forces are bearing down on strategic town of Pokrovsk.

Blinken and Lammy provided a potential justification for missile escalation on Tuesday, censuring Iran for supplying a first batch of short-range, high-speed Fath-360 ballistic missiles to Russia, a step up from the slower Shahed drones it has given Moscow until now. Russia was likely to use the missiles “within weeks”, Blinken warned. The Fath-360 missiles have a range of about 75 miles, according to the US. They could be used to strike Ukrainian cities close to the frontline such as Kharkiv or Zaporizhzhia, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk in the Donbas, even theoretically Kyiv, & allow Russian to use its own stock of longer-range cruise & ballistic missiles to attack targets elsewhere in Ukraine, as it has done throughout the war.

The missile war in Ukraine may appear unceasing, but it follows its own logic of inventories, with Russia’s goal being to exhaust Ukraine’s air defences. Kyiv has already run out of short-range Buk and S-300 systems, which left its power stations defenceless earlier this year.

Putin Wanted More Territory.

This technology could also be used to target close-range ballistic missile (CRBM) systems that arrived in-country from Iran in recent weeks. Former US ambassador William Courtney, now a a senior fellow at RAND Corporation, told CNN. With a range of just 75 miles, US-made system like ATACMS “could hit anything at that distance and well beyond,” he told CNN.

Two people die in Ukraine's Odesa after Moscow & Kyiv exchange drone and missile attacks
Ukrainian officials say two people have died in a missile attack on Black Sea port city of Odesa

KYIV, Ukraine -- Two people died in a missile attack on the Ukrainian Black Sea port city of Odesa, local officials said, as Moscow and Kyiv exchanged drone and missile attacks. The Ukrainian air force said Sunday it shot down 10 of the 14 drones and one of the three missiles Russia launched overnight.

Odessa's regional governor, said 2 who died in the suburbs of Odesa on Saturday night were a married couple, and that another person was wounded in the attack. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said it downed 29 Ukrainian drones overnight into Sunday over western and southwestern regions, with no damage caused by the falling debris. It also said another Ukrainian drone was shot down Sunday morning over the western Ryazan region.

While Ukraine and Russia regularly launch overnight drone raids on each other’s territory, Ukrainian officials generally do not confirm or deny attacks within Russia’s borders. The latest attacks came after Ukraine made a new call Saturday on the West to allow it to use the long-range missiles they have provided to strike targets deep inside Russia, as Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back Russian advances in eastern Ukraine.

Permission to use Western long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia could force the Kremlin to stretch supply lines by moving bases further from Ukraine into home federation turf in Russia.
Signs that tide was shifting over past week. The Guardian reported U.K. had already decided to allow Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles for strikes into Russia. Politico wrote White House reportedly discussing potential targets Russia vs Ukraine show who strike who weapons first.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken & Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lammy pose with Ukraine's President Zelensky at Mariinsky Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine on Sep. 11, 2024, amid Russian invasion. Hopes of a positive announcement during meetings between President Joe Biden and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Washington on Sept. 13 were dashed, decision-making process appears to have been postponed to the UN general assembly in New York later this month it

A day later on Sept. 13 in Kyiv, U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said allowing Ukraine to use ATACMS to strike targets deep inside Russia is the subject of "intense consultations." Ukraine has been eagerly awaiting the potential lifting of restrictions, with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov saying in August that he had presented U.S. with a list of proposed targets within Russia.

Calling lifting of restrictions a "game changer is probably too strong a word," Andreas Umland, analyst at Stockholm Center for Eastern European Studies, told Kyiv Independent. But it would make a big difference of course. That's why the Ukrainians are so eager to get it.

Potential targets
A public list of targets — either those requested by Ukraine or approved by the U.S. or the U.K. — is unlikely for operational reasons.

Ukraine: Kursk War on Russia counteroffensive continue on Russia's, as they has fail as they aim to retake Ukrainian-held territory been stopped, a spokesperson for Ukrainian military admin in the region told AFP on Sept. 18. Statement comes a week after Moscow launched a counteroffensive against Ukrainian troops in Russian region. "They tried to attack from the flanks, but they were stopped there," spokesperson Oleksii told AFP.

Spokesperson admitted only "some minor successes" by Russia. "Russians entered one of the settlements, started fighting for another settlement, but that was it," he said. Russia claimed to recaptured 10 settlements only on the day one of their counteroffensive since then.

Kyiv launched its cross-border incursion into Kursk Oblast in early Aug. 6, allegedly seizing around 100 settlements over 1,300 square k/m (500 sq miles). Moscow's troops launched counterattack in effort to dislodge Ukrainian troops from positions on Russian soil.
