I believe rangers have other duties aside from nabbing litterbugs, such as looking after the park and ensuring everything is in order. I ain't sure if catching litterers was the rangers' primary assignment at that time or if each ranger was given a quota of litterers to nick, but I have my doubts.

Imagine a scenario where an awful lot of people are falsely accused of littering. There'll be one helluva of a mess, and the wronged parties won't take the falsity of these accusations lying down, like what I did.

The blaze of controversy surrounding a high number of complaints about the false accusations may compel the authorities to begin an investigation into the matter. That's the kind of egregious misconduct public servants could do without.

True...For him to remain in the job longer, it requires a balance... Those who are caught littering have no way to escape the consequences. ..You and your gf fall into the category of being young and perceived as easy targets...

You have certainly lived up to your name! For me, I had a little problem with peeping Toms. Once, sunshades were held to my car's windscreens and side windows with suction cups to block out prying eyes. Still, a peeping Tom was undeterred as he sneaked up on my vehicle to peep through small gaps between the sunshades. Somehow or other, both our eyeballs came into contact for a split second, and he beat a hasty retreat. I then drove off in dismay with my paramour.

It never occurred to me the rangers would spring a trap on park visitors. It's even more incredible to me that they would hide among the bushes and wait for the opportunity to nab unsuspecting victims.

The two rangers were in fact standing conspicuously underneath a tree about 60 metres away from where we sat, with our backs facing them. They either failed to notice the cans on the bench prior to our arrival and saw the cans only after we left or else they had already seen those cans before we arrived and decided to make a victim of us just for the fun of it.

It's clear the rangers didn't follow the proper protocol for nicking litterbugs, and that's to catch them red-handed dropping litter before stopping them. To say the least, they were acting totally irresponsibly. I'm inclined to think that the generality of park officers are a responsible lot. Alas, one rotten apple ruined the image of the rest of them.

This type of tricks I also played before lah, brother!  Getting people into trouble then laugh out loud lah! Honestly I got many people into trouble before lah! Those rangers knew many people always left rubbish behind so they set up a booby trap to catch unsuspecting people lah! I know 100s of such tricks lah!

Have you ever stopped to consider that you might not be the only set of affectionate lovebirds around? Your close presence to them may be making them uncomfortable, which is why they feel the need to address the situation.

I had considered the possibility that the ranger may be something of a prude who was disgusted with our open display of affection. Equally, I had not discounted the possibility of him having a voyeuristic interest in us. The fact that the two men had remained at the same spot under the tree shooting the breeze for an hour with us both in sight suggests that they were not feeling uneasy with our display of affection. Well, the point is moot. What is unacceptable is giving false testimony that we brought the two cans along and were seen drinking from them. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Rangers are in charge of managing and protecting public parks. They make sure the properties, plants, trees inside the park are not destroyed, defaced or vandalized. They also keep an eye on park visitors. But they won't go as far as to lay traps to catch litterbugs. If they see anyone dropping litter, they'll stop them. The person must be caught in the act before the ranger can book them.

I'll second that! Wendy ought to be put into some position of authority to eke out a higher standard of cleanliness and orderliness in our city-state. She's doubtless the best person for the job, given her obsession about cleanliness. Cleanliness to her is next to godliness. Her readiness to relentlessly pursue habitual litterbugs and motorists who park their cars illegally causing an obstruction has not gone unnoticed.

Minister of Cleanliness, Good Hygiene and Orderliness sounds like an apt designation. For a start, she could oversee a concerted campaign to keep our streets, surroundings and outdoor living areas spick and span in order to maintain good health, and our roads free of illegally-parked vehicles. With her no-nonsense attitude and dogged determination to enforce compliance with the rules using draconian measures, I'll warrant you that our island will become a clean city rather than a cleaned one in less than no time!

This is a public park, not a public dustbin. Come work in Singapore and build our buildings, doesnt mean no need follow Singapore law. The authorities really need to have some sort of instruction/lessons for foreigners who come and work here.

I'm inclined to agree with Wendychan that fines for littering do act as much of a deterrent. I know of a Chinese couple living here who are also S'pore PRs. Some time back, they brought the wife's parents over from China to stay with them and look after their kid.

Her father has an annoying habit of spitting outdoors - on the sidewalks, gardens, roads. He used to live in a rural area, and his spitting is a carry-over from his rural days. He continued spitting even after moving to a city in the mainland. Old habits die hard. Spitting is said to be "habit-forming" among many a rural folk.

The wife told her dad to refrain from spitting as SG has strict rules prohibiting spitting and littering, and offender is liable to a fine. She added that he could not escape detection as cameras were ubiquitous.

As it turned out, he fought the urge to spit and only spat on occasion in the loo. His family members were pleasantly surprised he had managed to refrain from spitting in the open during his 6-year stay in SG. In his homeland he would spit as he pleases. It goes without saying that people are fearful of being hit where it hurts most - the pocket.
