Lee Hsien Yang, younger bro of LHL of 2nd son of late LKY. Is although currently not in S' pore, has continued to weigh in on political happenings in the run-up to the May 3 polls. While he (LHY) is a member of the Progress S'pore Party, the younger son of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has also featured candidates from other opposition parties. In his latest social media post on Friday morning (Apr 25), Mr LHY spoke glowingly of Workers’ Party (WP) candidate Harpreet Singh Nehal, whom he knows personally and whom he characterised as a “conviction politician”. Mr LHY disclosed that he knew Mr Singh b4 he entered politics. Mr Singh, who has been a Senior Counsel for the Supreme Court of S'pore since 2007, began to volunteer for the WP during the pandemic and became a member last year.
“He discussed S'pore politics & how one might bring about a better future for S'pore. He found that we shared a lot of common ground on what was wrong & need for change. I encouraged him to play a bigger role in politics, but at the time, he was not ready to enter the fray. He continued our exchanges when Harpreet visited UK,” wrote Mr LHY. He added that when he began seeing Mr Singh at WP’s grassroots activities, it brought him “for the future.”“was glad he had chosen to step up. His obvious professional accomplishments point to his potential contribution if he were to be elected,” Mr LHY also wrote, adding that Senior Counsel also has some hidden talents, such as playing saxophone and speaking some Teochew. He also called the WP team at Punggol, which includes new candidates Alia Mattar, Alexis Dang, and Jackson Au, “a breath of fresh air” & encouraged readers to watch speeches these candidates had made during Nomination Day.
SG: Voters must decide if they want more opposition in Parliament and a weaker govt, or to give Prime Minister Lawrence Wong PAP a strong mandate to govern S'pore, said Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. In a Facebook post on April 25, ESM Goh noted voters want PAP to form govt & understandably, wanted return more opposition candidates to Parliament, is like wanting to spend more today & save more for a rainy day at same time, reality is voters cannot have both,” wrote Mr Goh, 83, who was S'pore’s 2nd PM.
Mr Goh. Citing his personal experience, ESM Goh said the PM of a small country needs “both quality & quantity of MPs in Parliament to have political strength to lead S'pore, especially at a critical juncture of geopolitical rivalry, tension, and disruptive challenges.
He likened political contests to a boxing competition. “Only one winner,” he said. “No boxer steps into ring declaring that he only wants to check his opponent or be his sparring partner forever. He is out to knock out other fellow, if not now, then in future contests.
“Similarly, no political party should be satisfied with being a loyal opposition forever,” said ESM Goh, who served as PM from November 1990 to August 2004
