Iran’s new foreign minister calls for dialogue with EU

Iran’s new foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, calls for dialogue with the European Union to resolve bilateral issues, following a phone call with the bloc’s top diplomat. The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes development of relations with Euro Union in an environment based on mutual respect,” Araghchi says in a statement. Relations between the EU and Iran have deteriorated in recent years.

The bloc accuses Tehran of failing to rein in its nuclear activity, providing support to Palestinian terror group Hamas, backing Russia’s war in Ukraine, and committing human rights violations.
The development of relations “requires dialogue to resolve issues between the two parties and the correction of the misguided policies of European countries,” For his part, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell says on social media platform X that he has discussed “prospects for renewed engagement on all files of mutual interest” with his Iranian counterpart.

Zelenskyy: Ukraine uses new domestic-made drone missile for the first time. Ukrainian army attacked the Russian army for the first time on 24 August with a new weapon, the Palianytsia drone missile. [Palianytsia is a traditional Ukrainian bun; this word is difficult for Russians to pronounce correctly, so it is used as a shibboleth – ed.]

Source: Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Independence Day celebrations

Quote from Zelenskyy: "This is our new method of retaliation against the aggressor. The enemy has been defeated. I thank everyone who made it possible. All developers, manufacturers and our soldiers. I am proud of you. It will be challenging for Russia, and it will be even more difficult to say exactly what [missile or drone] struck. It is difficult to counteract but very easy to understand why [it was launched]."
Ukraine pushing Russian forces out of Kharkiv Oblast step by step, Zelensky says On Aug. 23 in his evening address Ukrainian Armed Forces are "gradually" pushing Russian troops out of Kharkiv Oblast. He statement comes after Ukraine's 3rd Separate Assault Brigade launched counterattack in Kharkiv & advanced almost two sq k/m deep into front-line area a day prior, saying he had spoken with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, who briefed him on situation in Kharkiv.

"We are pushing Russian army out. Gradually. The invader will not conquer Kharkiv and will not conquer our Ukraine," the intensity of fighting had decreased compared to other sectors, several reports of Russia preparing new attacks have emerged again. Oleksandr Borodin, a spokes for Ukraine's 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty recent counterattack in Kharkiv destroyed the positions and logistics of the 20th Army of Russia.

Despite damage, including to its personnel, the Russian army still has large reserves in this area.

Russian troops used land-based missiles, launched from Voronezh and Rostov regions, including Iskander-K cruise missiles and Iskander-M ballistic missiles. They also launched six Kh-59/Kh-69 guided missiles from Russian Kursk and Belgorod regions. They the troops launched an overnight attack on Ukraine, using a variety of missiles, including ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk said.

The nighttime Russian strike targeted a hotel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, wounding two journalists. Authorities reported that a 3rd journalist was missing in the rubble.

Kramatorsk, the last major city in Donbas region still under Ukrainian control, lies about 20 k/m (13 miles) from the lines. Be4 Russia’s February 2022 invasion, city had population of around 150,000 but since been the target of numerous attacks.

As 8:00 a.m., authorities reported two wounded individuals, & one person remained trapped under the rubble. All three victims are journalists from Ukraine, the USA, and Great Britain.

1) Hamas commander in Lebanon reportedly targeted in Israeli drone strike. Terror official said seriously injured in strike on car near Sidon * Launcher used in Rishon Lezion attack found in Khan Younis * Iran claims Israel no longer able to deter enemies.

2) Iran-aligned Houthi militants have launched attacks on international shipping near Yemen since November in solidarity with Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas.

3) Israel and Hezbollah step back from the brink of wider war — for now. CNNF....or nearly a month, people in Lebanon and Israel braced for a wider war. A deadly rocket strike from Lebanon last month on the town of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights was followed by an Israeli retaliatory strike that killed Hezbollah’s top commander, Fu’ad Shukr, in southern Beirut.

The powerful Iran-backed group vowed to respond. The threat triggered a slew of flight cancelations on both sides of the border, a chorus of governments imploring their citizens to leave Lebanon and Israel, and a breathless diplomatic effort to avert an escalation that Western governments feared would spark a regional conflict. On Sunday morning, Hezbollah said it had delivered its anticipated response by launching hundreds of drones and Katyusha rockets, Soviet-era short-range projectile. Swarm of airborne weapons, it said, sought to overwhelm Israel’s vaunted air defense systems and pave a path for its targets: 11 Israeli military sites in northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights. Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu said all of Hezbollah’s drones were intercepted.

Israeli officials said military pre-emptively struck Hezbollah targets in the early hours of Sunday to prevent a much wider attack referring to Israeli strikes that began around half an hour before Hezbollah’s all ready to attack.

Hezbollah dismissed this. “What happened was aggression, not preemptive action,” Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech on Sunday night, three Lebanese fighters were killed in those Israeli attacks In Lebanon, Hezbollah said it had concluded attacks by Israel for the day. Nasrallah declared group’s retaliation for Shukr’s killing “meticulously” completed with both sides declaring victory, region appears to once again walked back from brink of all-out war.

Israel’s war on Gaza live: Israel bombards Gaza, besieges West Bank’s Jenin. At least 12 Palestinians have been killed in recent Israeli attacks across Gaza, including in Jabalia in north  Khan Younis in south, Gaza’s civil defence reports.
Siege of Jenin city by Israeli forces leaves Palestinian residents without food, water, electricity or internet access, as most intense military raid on occupied West Bank in decades continues. Israeli military closes off Hebron after overnight attacks in West Bank

Israeli forces have sealed off the city of Hebron in the occupied West Bank and arrested two people there during a raid, reports the Wafa news agency. Forces used concrete blocks to close off entrances to the city from north, south, east and west, according to Wafa. Closure comes after a night in which two separate bomb attacks targeted the illegal Israeli settlements of Gush Etzion and Karmei Tzur – located to the north of Hebron where two Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli forces, according to Israel’s military.
Fierce clashes in Jenin as IDF continues major West Bank operation. Locals say they do not have access to water and electricity; Israel says at least 26 gunmen killed during operation; Palestinian terror groups have claimed 13 as their own.

Heavy clashes were reported Saturday in the West Bank city of Jenin between the IDF and local gunmen as the Israeli military continued its operations in the area. IDF has been carrying out a major raid northern West Bank since early Wed, action is now largely focusing on the Jenin area, after raids in Tulkarem and Far’a concluded.

During a raid on the Jenin refugee camp on Saturday, the IDF said troops neutralized dozens of explosive devices that were planted along the roads. “We are cut off from the world,” Taher al-Saadi, a Jenin resident, told AFP.

“The water is cut off. The electricity is cut off, the sewage system is no longer working. All the infrastructure is destroyed, we no longer have any services that work. “The bakeries are at a standstill. We can’t find milk for the children.”

Ukraine Pushing Slowly West In Russia Towards Key Kursk City. Town of Glushkovo is last bastion for an estimated 3,000 Russian troops trapped south of the Seim River in Kursk. Though rapid momentum of early days of its Kursk invasion has slowed considerably after 25 days, Ukraine is still on offensive in several areas there. One of the big efforts is a push toward city of Glushkovo.

Ukrainian forces are less than seven miles from that city, latest map from DeepState, a Ukrainian open-source intelligence organization that has proven reliable in the past. Glushkovo is the last main bastion of defense for an estimated 3,000 troops trapped south of the Seim River, which runs through Glushkovo.“ The situation in the Glushkovo district remains difficult,” the Kremlin-connected Rybar Telegram channel stated Saturday. “Ukrainian continue to strike at the defensive lines & supply routes of the Russian Armed Forces, & are also preparing for a possible offensive in the area.”

Ukraine can either attack the city directly or try to cut it off and bypass it from the south. As part of that effort, Ukraine has continued its whack-a-mole approach toward the pontoon bridges Russia is building to temporarily replace the spans destroyed by Ukraine, video shows a strike by an M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket, or HIMARS on one such crossing.

Ukrainian Air Force released showing crews loading Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range precision-guided bombs, or JDAM-ERs onto a MiG-29 Fulcrum show amunitions blow up portions of bridges over Seim River. JDAM-ER and French guided bombs, both with a range of dozens of miles, have been key to severing Russia’s established river crossings.

Lebanese Forces Chief Condemns Hezbollah On Fight With Israel

Iran-backed Hezbollah was the only Lebanese faction that did not disarm after the 1975-1990 civil war. One-half control by Hezbollah.

Continue from above....Beirut, Lebanon :

The head of the Christian political party Lebanese Forces on Sunday accused Hezbollah of dragging the country into a war with Israel without consulting the people.

In a speech attacking the Shiite Muslim group, Samir Geagea, who heads the main Christian bloc in parliament, accused Hezbollah of "confiscating the Lebanese people's decision on war and peace, as if there were no state".

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in October, Hezbollah has engaged in near-daily cross-border fire with Israel in support of its Palestinian ally, which the Lebanese Forces and other parties oppose.
Lebanese who fear war is coming have an unusual backup plan: Moving to Syria

Residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs have been scrambling to make contingency plans since an Israeli airstrike demolished an apartment building in a busy neighborhood where Hezbollah has its main operations and base of support. For most, that means moving in with relatives or renting homes in Christian, Druze or Sunni-majority areas of Lebanon that are generally considered safer than the Shiite-majority areas where the Hezbollah militant group has its main operations and base of support.

But for a small number, plan B is a move to neighboring Syria. Although Syria is in its 14th year of civil war, active fighting has long been frozen in much of the country. Lebanese citizens, who can cross the border without a visa, regularly visit Damascus. And renting an apartment is significantly cheaper in Syria than in Lebanon.

Lebanese capital had been largely untouched by the near-daily cross-border clashes that have displaced around 100,000 people from southern Lebanon and tens of thousands more in Israel since Oct. 8. That’s when Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel in support of its ally Hamas , which a day earlier led a deadly raid in Israel that killed some 1,200 people and took another 250 hostage. Israel responded with an aerial bombardment and ground offensive in Gaza that has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians.

In recent weeks, the conflict in Lebanon appeared on the brink of spiraling out of control.

Israel war on Gaza updates: No deal means captives in ‘coffins’, says Hamas. Hamas’s armed wing says Premier Netanyahu’s reliance on army raids – instead of a truce deal – means more Israeli captives will “be returned to their families in coffins”. As President Joe Biden meets high-level Gaza truce negotiators after criticizing Netanyahu for failing to do enough to free captives.

In the occupied West Bank, the death toll from Israel’s large-scale raids rises to at least 30 as the Israeli siege on the Jenin refugee camp entered a sixth day, leaving Palestinians without access to food, water, power or internet.

Britain suspends some weapons export licenses to Israel over “clear” concerns the arms could be used to commit “a serious violation of international humanitarian law”.

At least 40,786 people have been killed and 94,224 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7.
Israel war on Gaza updates: No deal means captives in ‘coffins’, says Hamas. Hamas’s armed wing says Premier Netanyahu’s reliance on army raids – instead of a truce deal – means more Israeli captives will “be returned to their families in coffins”.

Hamas’ brutal new tactics signal new phase in war and hostage crisis.

As the terrorists announcement that militants guarding Israeli hostages in the buildings and tunnels of Gaza had “new instructions” to kill them. As Israeli troops closed in, Hamas signaled opening of a chilling new chapter in already brutal war.

Seizing on a spasm of public outrage in Israel at PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s inability to bring home remaining hostages, Hamas released a comic book-style image of a kneeling figure threatened with a gun, followed by a video of Eden Yerushalmi, 24, a bartender at Nova music festival & one of six hostages who Israel says were shot at close range in Hamas captivity last week b4 Israeli forces could reach them.

In a cruel twist of timing – the funerals of the slain hostages had taken place on Sunday and Monday – Hamas said it would drip-feed footage of what it described as the “final messages” of the remaining five. It released a second video on Tuesday, featuring Ori Danino, a 25-year-old who was abducted from the Nova music festival on October 7. Danino had helped other festival-goers escape the horror. It was not clear when footage was filmed – nor whether it was intended that the videos would be used in this way.
