Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, head US Navy operations in the Middle East, said it was the first time the Houthis had used an unmanned surface vessel, or USV, since their harassment of commercial ships in the Red Sea began after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. They have, however, used them in years past.

Fabian Hinz, a missile expert and research fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said the USVs are a key part of the Houthi maritime arsenal and were used during previous battles against the Saudi coalition forces that intervened in Yemen's war. They have regularly been used as suicide drone boats that explode upon impact.

Most of the Houthis' USVs are likely assembled in Yemen but often fitted with components made in Iran, such as computerised guidance systems, Hinz said.

Israel tries to appease US with proposals for Gaza as Blinken heads to Middle East Washington wants concessions from the Netanyahu administration, as critics say plans lack detail or commitment

Israeli officials are scrambling to head off mounting frustration in Washington in the run-up to a potentially difficult meeting between top US diplomat and Benjamin Netanyahu by offering a series of policy proposals on Gaza that critics say lack detail or commitment. The US has offered staunch support to Israel since the outbreak of its war with Hamas three months ago but is anxious to secure some concessions from Netanyahu to lower regional tensions and help avert a wider conflict in the Middle East.

Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, arrived in Turkey on Friday to begin a week-long Middle East tour. During his upcoming visit to Israel, Blinken is expected to put pressure on Netanyahu to do more to protect civilians in Gaza, allow more aid to reach territory and rein in outspoken far-right ministers who have called for mass resettlement of Palestinians – rhetoric that US has condemned as inflammatory and irresponsible.

Netanyahu has angered Washington far refusing to engage in any detailed planning for the governance of Gaza when Israel’s military offensive ends and by rejecting the US’s preferred options.

In Ukraine / Russia War....Here.

Elsewhere, Russian soldiers do not seem to be fairing well on battlefield in other areas of Ukraine either. On Monday, Ukraine’s military released footage appearing to show Russian soldiers shooting themselves dead during fighting.

In the 9-second clip, three Russian soldiers are seen beside an infantry fighting vehicle (BMP).
Two lie down, while one sits in the middle. At the sixth second, soldier on the left fires a shot, followed by two shots from soldier on the right.
https://www.kyivpost.com/post/26499
The command did not specify the location of the incident or the fate of the third Russian soldier.

While Kyiv Post could not independently verify the video's authenticity, Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko reposted the Zahid command's publication on his Telegram channel.

In the comments section, commentators expressed little sympathy for the soldiers.

One person wrote: “And was it necessary for them to go to Ukraine?”

Another said: “So they couldn't shoot themselves at home? It was necessary to come to Ukraine?”

Another commentator asked: “why they don't surrender,” adding: “Shouldn't the instinct of self-preservation kick in?”

Clues to the answer can be found in the testimony of Russian POWs interviewed last year by Kyiv Post.

Putin cannot f..k care about them been kill or one (1) man said, he was told by his commanders that it's better to use a grenade to kill himself and any enemies approaching rather than surrender and face “torture.”

Israel has acknowledged assassinating Hezbollah's most senior military commander in the south of Lebanon, with Foreign Minister Israel Katz offering an unusual public confirmation in a TV interview. Several other high-profile figures from the group have also been killed.

As the Israeli military and the militant group Hezbollah exchange fire over the border separating southern Lebanon and northern Israel, there are fears the raging war between Israel and Hamas could ignite a wider regional conflict.

Below is a look at what's going on, the background to the long-simmering tension between Israel and Hezbollah, and what the risks are for the region and the world. Almost daily since the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, Hezbollah rockets have struck Israeli positions, including military posts, in northern Israel. Israel has also hit targets in southern Lebanon, and tens of thousands of people from border communities in both countries have been evacuated.

Its smaller, similarly Iran-backed Hamas. Hezbollah has been designated terrorist organization by the US govt for almost two decades, several o leaders, including Nasrallah, are listed as global terrorists.

What does Lebanon have to do with the Israel-Hamas war?...Lebanon is a country of about 5.3 million people just to the north of Israel. The two nations have fought multiple wars. When state of Israel was established in 1948, more than 100,000 Palestinian refugees fled to Lebanon. UN agency for Palestinians says there are currently between 200,000 and 250,000 Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon, many have been left impoverished due to "decades of structural discrimination related to employment opportunities and denial of the right to own property." After Israel responded to Hamas' Oct. 7 terror attack by launching the war in Gaza to dismantle the group, Hezbollah started attacking targets in northern Israel in support of Hamas and the Palestinian people.

Hezbollah said it did not know Oct. 7 attack was coming ahead of time & not believed to coordinate extensively with Hamas. The Iran's "resistance front" & prospect of a wider war. Iran supports both Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as the Houthi rebel movement in Yemen that has been attacking ships in the Red Sea, severely impacting maritime trade through the vital shipping passage.

All of the Iran-backed groups have said their actions are in support of the Palestinian people, and none of them acknowledge any orchestration or coordination with Iran, which denies any role in the attacks.

Israel Killing Of Hezbollah Leader Tests Willingness To Deal. Fighting has escalated amid attempts to hostilities contained and possible border negotiations. Reports Mon Israel has killed a major Hezbollah commander comes after what is described as militants' first act of retaliation against Israel following assassination of senior Hamas official Saleh Al-Arouri in southern Beirut.

This development threatens to jeopardize U.S.-led efforts to calm situation on Lebanese-Israeli front, after Hezbollah's leadership appeared to signal a conditional willingness to engage in such a process. Reuters reported on Monday that an Israeli strike on south Lebanon killed Wissam al-Tawil a senior commander in Hezbollah's elite Radwan force. Meanwhile, Hezbollah issued a statement Saturday saying it had launched a barrage of 62 rockets at Israeli air surveillance base located at Mount Meron in Northern Israel. According to the statement rocket attack struck intended target in what it said was a preliminary response to assassination of Al-Arouri, indicating the score with Israel has yet to be settled over the killing of the Hamas official.

The Israeli side meanwhile confirmed that 40 rockets were launched towards the base, without further elaborating as to whether the rockets had reached their target. But according to Israeli daily Haaretz on Sunday night, the Israelis are now saying the operation inflicted heavy damage on its military facility, meanwhile announced it carried out a large-scale operation against Hezbollah targets in south Lebanon in response to Shiite movement's operation. According to Israeli army “significant assets” belonging to the movement were hit in the attacks.

These developments come after Hezbollah's secretary general Hassan Nasrallah on Friday vowed retaliation for Al-Arouri’s assassination, which marked the first Israeli military operation targeting the Lebanese capital since the 2006 war with Hezbollah.

US strikes Houthi targets as Israel-Hamas war rages. live news Live: See pictures on the ground in Yemen showing US, UK airstrikes

US strikes Houthi targets as Israel-Hamas war rages. Iranian-backed Houthi militants warned they would retaliate after the US and UK launched strikes against the group in Yemen, as tensions sparked by Israel's war in Gaza spread to a new arena.. The US strikes were a response to the Houthis' attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, which have effectively closed one of the world’s main trade routes to most container ships.

The escalation comes as world leaders try to keep the Israel-Hamas war from spilling into a wider regional conflict involving Iran's proxies, including the Houthis and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israel has hit back against a genocide case brought by South Africa to the UN's top court, saying the claims presented a "grossly distorted story." Its lawyers argued that if genocide had been committed, it was against Israel during the October 7 attacks.

US-UK strikes draw sharp response from Houthis. Here's what we know

Germany says it’ll intervene in ICJ case on Israel’s behalf, blasting genocide accusation.

The German government sharply rejects allegations before the UN’s top court that Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza and warned against “political instrumentalization” of the charge.

Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit says in a statement that Israel was “defending itself” after the “inhuman” attacks by Hamas on October 7.

He says Germany would intervene as a third party before the ICJ under an article allowing states to seek clarification on the use of a multilateral convention.

The move allows Germany to present its own case to the court that Israel has not infringed the genocide convention and has not committed or intended to commit genocide.

Germany is not claiming to be legally impacted by South Africa’s case and therefore it does not require the ICJ’s permission for third party intervention.

As a signatory of the 1948 Genocide Convention, it has the right to join cases and put forward its arguments on the case.

Hebestreit stated that Germany “intends to intervene as a third party in the main hearing,” suggesting Berlin will intrude in South Africa’s primary case against Israel in which the court could take years to decide whether or not Israel has violated the Genocide Convention.

Accordingly, the move does not appear to influence this week’s proceedings — hearings where South Africa has requested an interim injunction from the court compelling Israel to implement a ceasefire. A decision on that more immediate matter is expected within one month.

In light of German history and the crimes against humanity of the Shoah, the German government is particularly committed to the [UN] Genocide Convention,” signed in 1948 in the wake of the Holocaust, Hebestreit says.

He says the Convention marked a “central instrument” under international law to prevent another Holocaust.

For this reason, he says, “we stand firmly against a political instrumentalization” of the Convention.
