Biden sent private message to Tehran amid airstrikes: ‘We’re well-prepared’

After second night of US-UK strikes in Yemen against Iran-backed Houthis, fears of wider regional conflict grow as Joe Biden said on Saturday US has sent a private message to Tehran “we’re confident we’re well-prepared”, following a 2nd night of US / British strikes against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Navy on Friday warned American-flagged vessels to steer clear of areas around Yemen in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden for the next 72 hours after the initial airstrikes. The Houthi leadership, who say they are acting in solidarity with Gaza and targeting Israeli-linked shipping, later vowed fierce retaliation across the Red Sea trade route.

“All American-British interests have become legitimate targets” following the strikes, the rebels’ supreme political council said on Friday.

At an emergency session of the UN security council on Friday in New York, where US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield warned no ship was safe from Houthi threat in the Red Sea.

US military strategists warned Saturday that the so-called “triple-h” threat (Hamas-Houthi-Hezbollah) could require a significant increase in US military capabilities to protect US national security interests and military personnel in the region and support a commitment to freedom of navigation.

Retired Lt Gen David Deptula, now dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, told CNN that protecting business was “secondary” to the priority of security in the region.

But, he added: “The implications of the restrictions on shipping is having a significant impact already and that could reverse the downward trend in inflation and reverse it to going up.”

The US economy will be a central issue in the presidential election this November as Biden seeks a second term in the White House on the back of a relatively strong economy and an effective programme so far of reducing sky-high inflation.

The Israel-Hamas war reached a grim milestone of 100 days on Sunday (Jan 14), with more civilian deaths in Gaza, and relatives of dozens of hostages still awaiting their freedom.

There were also casualties in the West Bank an on Israel-Lebanon border sparked unprecedented attacks on Israel, has created a humanitarian catastrophe for 2.4 million people in Hamas-ruled Gaza, the UN and aid groups warn, and reduced much of the coastal strip to rubble. UN says roughly 85% of the territory's population have been displaced, crowded into shelters and struggling to get food, water, fuel and medical care.

"It's been 100 days and our situation is very bad," said Mohammad Kahil, displaced to Rafah, in southern Gaza near Egypt, from the territory's north. "There's no food, no water, no heating. We are dying from the cold."

The war began when Gaza-based Hamas attacked on Oct 7, resulting in about 1,140 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

WASHINGTON: US military carried out new strikes in Yemen on Tuesday (Jan 16) against anti-ship ballistic missiles in a Houthi-controlled part of the country as a missile struck a Greek-owned vessel in the Red Sea. Disruptions to Red Sea shipping caused by Houthi attacks will push up prices of consumer goods in Europe in particular, an executive from port and freight operator DP World said as impact on commerce increased. Attacks by Houthis on ships in region since November have affected companies and alarmed major powers - an escalation of Israel's more than 3-month-old war with Hamas militants in Gaza.

The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Hamas terrorist and have threatened to expand its attacks to include US ships in response to American and British strikes on its sites in Yemen.

In a bid to cut off their funding and supply of weapons, US President Joe Biden's administration plans to put Houthi rebels back on a US list of terrorist organisations, US officials told Reuters.

Biden admin in 2021 taken Houthis off two lists designating them as terrorists, but nuw reversing a decision by former President Donald Trump. The latest move would put Houthis back on 1 of the 2 lists, ("this marking them as "specially designated global terrorists.)"

The White House said additional US strikes on Tuesday took out ballistic missiles Houthis were ready to launch, confirming a Reuters story earlier, citing US officials, that a new strike was launched at four anti-ship missiles. The strike had not been previously reported

Identifying Houthi targets is proving to be challenging for US forces. American and other Western intelligence agencies have not spent significant time or resources in recent years collecting data on the location of Houthi air defenses, command hubs,...

US analysts have been rushing to catch up and catalog potential Houthi targets every day, the officials said. American forces are bracing for much larger retaliatory attacks from the Houthis

Pentagon spokesperson Maj Gen Patrick Ryder was vague about the amount of damage the US believes it did to the Houthi’s capacity to launch missiles and drones, declining to endorse leaks to the New York Times suggesting about 25% of the Yemeni group’s attack capability was degraded.

Since Friday initial 150 bomb assault by UK & US plus follow-up attack on radar facility 24 hrs later – Houthi rebels then launched missile at a US navy destroyer (which was shot down), struck two commercial vessels with missiles, damaging each of them slightly & aimed a drone at a third, again causing some damage but no injuries. Thursday, movement’s leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, in his first speech since US led intervention, said it was “a great honour” to be in direct confrontation with the Israelis, Americans and the British.

It remained unclear Houthis’ ability to mount attacks on shipping in Red Sea using either missiles & drones had been damaged. Houthis broadened their theatre of operation, a sign that some of their missile launch pads is been struck & impact on global supply chains was one of chief topics@World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, an indication of how group has catapulted itself as a geopolitical force. Russia oill depot is kana hit by Ukrainian drone, media say four oil tanks caught alight and the fire then spread over an area of 1,000 sq m (10,763sq ft). Russian authorities in Bryansk region say no-one was hurt. Bryansk governor said drone was intercepted near town of Klintsy & its explosives then fell on the oil depot. An unprecedented attack targeted a major oil loading terminal in Russia's second city, St Petersburg, on Thursday.

Russian reports suggested that drone was shot down without causing damage but there were indications in Kyiv that the attack, so far from the Ukrainian border, marked a new phase in strategy. "Yes, last night we hit the target. This thing crossed 1,250km (776 miles) last night," said Ukraine's Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin on Thursday.

Russia's defence ministry said on Friday that its air defence systems had brought down a Ukrainian drone over Bryansk at 06:40 local time (03:40 GMT) and regional head Alexander Bogomaz said later that two further drones had been destroyed without damage.

As the fire raged for several hours at the Klintsy oil depot some 70km north of the Ukrainian border, black smoke was seen billowing over neighbouring railway tracks. More than 30 people were evacuated, the governor added. There were also reports of a drone strike on a gunpowder factory near the city of Tambov, hundreds of kilometres north-east of the Ukrainian border.

A source at Ukraine's main intelligence directorate told media in Kyiv there would be further attacks on military targets inside Russia. The drone strike is the second on Russian oil facilities in two days.

The buildings were being rigged for demolition by troops when Palestinian gunmen fired an RPG at a tank securing the forces. A second blast then occurred in the buildings, possibly as a result of a second RPG, leading to their collapse.
