top US diplomat Marco Rubio has said the US is "troubled" by the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

His comments came as at least 114 Palestinians were killed in Israeli air strikes on Thursday, health officials said. Asked by BBC if the Trump admin remained fully behind nature of Israel's military action given scale of the recent Israeli attacks & its bombing of hospitals, he once again called on Hamas to surrender & release hostages & said there could be no peace so long as group exists. That said, we're not immune or in any way insensitive to the suffering of the people of Gaza, and I know that there's opportunities here to provide aid for them," he said.

Prospect that the dour, stern Syrian leader would live forever was a source of dark humor for many of my Syrian friends when lived and worked in Aleppo in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Hafez al-Assad died in June 2000. He wasn’t immortal after all.
His regime, however, lives on under the leadership of his son Bashar al-Assad. There were moments when the Bashar regime’s survival looked in doubt. When the so-called Arab Spring rolled across the region in 2011, toppling autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, and mass protests broke out in Yemen, Bahrain and Syria, some began to write epitaphs for the Assad dynasty... Israel announces major expansion of settlements in occupied West Bank.
(29-05-2025, 10:43 PM)Tee tiong huat Wrote: [ -> ]
Israeli ministers say 22 new Jewish settlements have been approved in the occupied West Bank - a biggest expansion in decades. Several already exist as outposts, built without govt authorisation, but will now be made legal under Israeli law. Others are completely new, according to Defence Minister Israel Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. TheSettlements - are widely seen as illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this - one of the most contentious issues between Israel & Palestinians. Katz said move to "prevents establishment of a Palestinian state would endanger Israel", while Palestinian presidency called it a "dangerous escalation".

The Israeli anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now called it "most extensive move of its kind" in more than 30 years & warned it would "dramatically reshape West Bank & entrench the occupation even further". Israel has built about 160 settlements housing some 700,000 Jews since it occupied of West Bank & East Jerusalem - land Palestinians wanted, along with Gaza, for their hoped-for future state - in the 1967 Middle East war. Successive Israeli govts have allowed settlements to grow. expansion risen sharply since PM Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power in late 2022 as head of a right-wing, pro-settler coalition, as well as start of Gaza war, triggered by Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack on Israel. On Israel Katz and Bezalel Smotrich - an ultranationalist leader and settler who has control over planning in the West Bank - officially confirmed a decision that is believed to have been taken by the government two weeks ago.A statement said ministers had approved 22 new settlements, the "renewal of settlement in northern Samaria [northern West Bank], it reinforcement of eastern axis of State of Israel". It highlighted what ministers described as "historic return" to Homesh and Sa-Nur, two settlements deep in northern West Bank which were evacuated at the same time as Israel withdrew its troops & settlers from Gaza in 2005.

A group of settlers established a Jewish religious school and an unauthorised outpost at Homesh, 2-years ago reports say among 9 made legal under Israeli law. Another settlement will reportedly be built not far to the south on Mount Ebal, near Nablus. Katz decision was "strategic move to prevents establishment of a Palestinian state that would endanger Israel, and serves as a buffer against our enemies." "This is a Zionist, security, and national response - and a clear decision on the future of the country," he added. Smotrich called it a "once-in-a-generation decision" and declared: "Next step sovereignty!" A spokesperson Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas says who governs parts of West Bank not under full Israeli control - called "dangerous escalation" accused Israel continuing to drag region into a "cycle of violence and instability". "This extremist Israeli govt is trying by all means to prevent the establishment of an independent Palestinian state," Nabil Abu Rudeineh told Reuters news agency. Lior Amihai, director of Peace Now, said:

"The Israeli govt no longer pretends otherwise: the annexation of occupied territories & expansion of settlements is its central goal." This kill blow a no renewed efforts to revive momentum on two-state solution to the decades-old Israel-Palestinian conflict - the internationally approved formula for peace that would see the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel - with a French-Saudi summit planned at the UN's headquarters in New York next month. Last year, UN's top court issued advisory opinion "Israel's continued presence in Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful".
"International Court of Justice (ICJ) also said Israeli settlements "have been established, are being maintained in violation of international law", and that Israel should "evacuate all settlers". Israel's prime minister said at the time that the court had made a "decision of lies" and insisted that "the Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land".
