Keir Starmer. UK will recognise a Palestinian state at a UN meeting in September unless Israel meets certain conditions. He says plan will go ahead unless Israeli govt takes "substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza", including a ceasefire - here's what else prime minister urged Israel to do

In response, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu tells Starmer he "rewards Hamas" and "punishes its victims" About 140 countries formally recognise a Palestinian state, last week France pledged to do so at UN meeting. Earlier, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said more than 60,000 Palestinians have now been killed since Israel's offensive. A UN-backed food security body said "the worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out" in Gaza; Israel insists there are no restrictions on aid deliveries & there is "no starvation".

The UK's announcement adds to growing international momentum to strengthen support for Palestinian statehood in the midst of growing outrage & alarm over the suffering in Gaza. Last week, France became the first country from the UN Security Council, the first of the G7 group of industrialised nations, to join the dozens countries which recognised state of Palestine decades ago. "Nothing can stand in the way of a just clear idea", French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot declared on social media.

But a lot will: the current Israeli govt’s staunch opposition, current expansion of Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank - the biggest in decades on land which would form part of any Palestinian state - with right-wing Israeli ministers’ vows to expel Palestinians from Gaza.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted this "peril" earlier, while addressing the UN General Assembly.
Throughout this Gaza war. Arab leaders called for a vision to alternative to violence on Hamas.A path to peace & security for Palestinians, Israelis, & the entire region, be4 this war, many had declared a 2-state solution was dead. Now it’s being brought back at least in words, as world struggles to find a way forward in this darkest of times.
US to deny visas to Palestinian officials: The US says it is going to impose sanctions on the Palestinians' self-governance organisation as well as the body that represents it on the international stage. Sanctions affect both Palestinian Authority (PA) which was established by Oslo peace accords, & Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) which recognised after the same process as the official representative of Palestinian people in return for it recognising Israel renouncing violence.
The State dept said it would deny visas to PLO members and PA officials. The timing & language of statement suggest Trump administration's response to this week's French-Saudi led conference at UN held to rally support for future 2 state solution, meeting came as France, UK and Canada committed to recognising an independent, demilitarised Palestinian state later this year, in some cases subject to certain conditions. The US castigated these moves, having privately warned of diplomatic consequences if those attending the UN conference made "anti-Israel" declarations. In sanctions announcement, the State Department accused PA & PLO of taking actions to "internationalise its conflict with Israel such as through the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ)".

It also referred to a series of long-standing complaints by US & Israel that PLO and PA had continued "to support terrorism including incitement and glorification of violence (especially in textbooks), and providing payments and benefits in support of terrorism to Palestinian terrorists and their families".
The Trump administration earlier this year lifted sanctions on violent Israeli settlers who have killed Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. One leading Palestinian politician described the sanctions move as "revenge" by the US for the commitments to recognise Palestinian statehood by a growing number of countries. The PA appeared to echo that sentiment in a statement released on Thursday. These campaigns have been escalating in response to the significant & successive achievements of Palestinian  diplomacy  it said.
"Particularly recent recognitions of the State of Palestine by key countries, the successful UN conference in New York, & historic declaration issued therein."

Hamas has proposed a ceasefire plan that would quiet the guns in Gaza for four-and-a-half months leading to an end to the war, in response to a proposal sent last week by Qatari and Egyptian mediators and backed by the US and Israel.

Negotiations on a hostage and ceasefire deal in Gaza appear to be at an impasse, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leaning towards expanded military operations and Hamas demanding the humanitarian situation be addressed before it returns to talks.

Netanyahu will urge a meeting of the security cabinet on Tuesday to support the full “conquest of the Strip” according to reports in Israeli media that were described as accurate by a source familiar with the matter.

Israel’s Ynet cited senior officials close to Netanyahu as saying: “The die is cast – we’re going for full conquest. If the Chief of Staff doesn’t agree – he should resign.”

In major shift, Germany suspends arms exports to Israel over Gaza City takeover plan. Israel’s 2nd-largest arms supplier to stop sales until further notice, chancellor says; Vance: US has ‘some disagreement’ about Israel’s war strategy, but aligned objectives.

Netanyahu: ‘We not going to occupy Gaza; we are going to free Gaza from Hamas’. As European and Arab nations slammed the cabinet’s decision to conquer Gaza City after 22 months of war against Hamas.

The cabinet decision bucked IDF warnings that the expanded fighting could endanger the remaining hostages in Gaza and deepen the humanitarian disaster there.

The planned Gaza City takeover has sparked fierce domestic criticism from Israeli opposition & hostage families, as well as international condemnations from United Nations, China, Russia, Britain and other countries.
Thousands protest in Jerusalem over Israel's Gaza City occupation plan
Protesters in support of hostages took to the streets of Jerusalem and marched towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence to voice their anger over his government's plan to fully occupy Gaza City. Former soldier, Max Kresch, marched holding a sign that read "I refused".

"We're over 350 soldiers who served during the war and were refusing to continue to serve in Netanyahu's political war," he told the BBC's Emir Nader.

Protests took place across Israel in cities including Haifa and Tel Aviv.

Israel's decision to expand its war in Gaza - a major escalation in the conflict - sparked condemnation from the UN and many countries including the UK, France, Australia, Turkey, Germany, Finland and Canada. The UN has warned that a complete military takeover would risk "catastrophic consequences" for Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

The plan, approved by the Israeli security cabinet, lists five "principles" for ending the war: disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarising the Gaza Strip, taking security control of the territory, and establishing "an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority".
Funerals have been held for five Al Jazeera staff members kill by Israel in a targeted attack in Gaza City. They has condemned killing of correspondents Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh and their crew, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa, calling it a “desperate attempt to silence their voices exposing impending seizure and occupation of Gaza”. Committee to Protect Journalists is calling for accountability, US National Press Club urged inquiry, & Freedom of the Press Foundation appealed for action to halt further attacks on media. Australia says it will recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September. Israel’s war on Gaza killed at least 61,499 people & wounded 153,575, estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Fifteen Hamas terrorists from the terror group’s elite Nukhba force infiltrated Ofakim early morning launched a brutal assault, murdering 25 civilians & injuring several others. IDF was slow to respond & caught in a state of unpreparedness, probe credited local defenders organizing a resistance that ultimately repelled attackers & prevented a significantly higher death toll. 8 members of the security forces — including police officers & IDF personnel — were killed in battle. likely thousands of Hamas fighters lying in wait, taking Gaza City will be a difficult costly slog for Israeli army, security experts say. On Aug 10, PM Benjamin Netanyahu laid out vision of victory in Gaza after 22 mths of war, w/military ordered to attack last remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza City & central camps farther south, w/pre-war population of some 760,000, official figures, Gaza City was biggest of any area in Palestinian territories. But unprecedented Hamas attack on Israel in 2023 sparked the war, population has only swelled, thousands of displaced fleeing intensive military ops to north. Gaza City itself come under intense aerial bombardment & remaining apartment & buildings now rub shoulders with tents & other makeshift shelters. Mr Amir Avivi, former Israeli general & head of Israeli Defence and Security Forum think-tank, described city as “heart of Hamas’ rule in Gaza”, has always been ctre of govt also has the strongest brigade of Hamas,” he said.

The first challenge for Israeli troops relates to Mr Netanyahu’s call for the evacuation of civilians. How such a feat will be carried out remains unclear.
Unlike the rest of the Gaza Strip, most of population has displaced at least once, around 300,000 residents of Gaza City have not moved since outbreak conflict, says Mr Avivi. Israel already tried to push civilians farther so-called humanitarian zones established by military, likely little space to accommodate more arrivals. “You cannot put another one million people over. It'll be horrible humanitarian crisis,” said Mr Michael Milshtein, an Israeli former military intelligence officer. Mr Avivi says, humanitarian aid would mainly distributed south of Gaza City in order to encourage residents to move towards future distribution sites managed by US- & Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).' The plans to operate 16 sites, up from just 4 currently. However, Gaza’s civil agency says Israeli troops are firing & killing civilians daily around the sites. Human Rights Watch called them a “death trap”, the UN & other groups lashed out at what they call a militarisation of aid.

Stalingrad’": To Mr Milshtein, who heads Palestinian Studies Programme at Tel Aviv University, Hamas’ military wing have as many as 10,000 to 15,000 fighters in Gaza City, many are freshly recruited. “Easy to convince a 17-, 18-, 19-year-old Palestinian to be a part of Al-Qassam Brigades,” he said, referring to Hamas’ armed wing, cited a lack of opportunities for the Gaza’s population. “While (Israel’s army) prepares itself, Hamas also prepares itself for coming warfare, if it takes place,” predicting battle could end up being “very similar to Stalingrad”. He was referring to battle for the city now known as Volgograd, one of longest and bloodiest in World War II.

Israeli army will encounter obstacles, including vast network of tunnels where hostages are likely being held, along with weapons depots, hiding places and combat posts. Other obstacles include improvised explosive devices they use of & civilians as human shields in a dense urban maze of narrow alleys and tall buildings, according to press reports.
“Almost impossible to go in there without creating both hostage casualties and a large humanitarian disaster,” said Ms Mairav Zonszein of International Crisis Group. Material destruction, she added, will be enormous, “will simply destroy everything, & then nothing will be left,” she said. Despite rumoured disagreements over the plan, the chief of the Israeli army, Lieutenant-General Eyal Zamir, said his forces “will be able to conquer Gaza City, just as it did in Khan Younis & Rafah in south”, “forces have operated there in the past, we will know how to do it again,” he said. Israel said Thursday it was moving forward with controversial plans to build thousands of new housing units in the occupied West Bank, a development far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said would “permanently bury the idea of a Palestinian state.”

To delight of Israeli settler movement, but horror of Palestinians and settlement watchdogs, Smotrich confirmed that the govt was reviving a long-stalled project to the east of Jerusalem. It is expected to be approved next week.

He presented the move as Israel’s response to the recent wave of countries announcing their intention to recognize a Palestinian state.

The govt of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has categorically rejected any prospect of Palestinian statehood, a position reinforced in a resolution passed by the Israeli Knesset last year.
